The Vampire Diaries 10 Things About Stefan That Have Aged Poorly

Stefan Salvatore from The Vampires Diaries is a seemingly good person, that, upon further inspection, is completely unaware of his own faults. Though he may be Elena Gilbert’s initial love interest in the show, he is rarely ever considered to be a fan-favorite character.

After the show ended in 2017, looking back at Stefan and his actions makes audiences all the more aware that he often lacks morals and humility. Though his eventual death in season 8 is a sad moment, he has more than a few flaws that are all the more obvious to fans who re-watch the show today.

Treated Caroline Poorly During Season 1

Though Stefan eventually dated and married Caroline, he was extremely rude to her early in the series. In the pilot, instead of telling her outright that he’s not interested, he basically gives her the cold shoulder and makes her feel awful.

He also never really cared about Caroline’s wellbeing until Elena expressed her feelings about her friend. Even while Damon manipulated and fed on her, which is one of the worst things that happened to Caroline in TVD, Stefan did very little to help or save her.

Made Elena Believe Damon Was The Bad Guy

The Vampire Diaries 10 Things About Stefan That Have Aged Poorly

At the beginning of the show, Stefan told Elena that Damon was to blame for their problems with Katherine, who Stefan believed to be his soulmate, and all the trauma they endured previously. He skewed Elena’s point of view and convinced her that he was always in the right while simultaneously painting Damon as the bad guy.

Though Damon certainly isn’t a saint, Stefan portrayed himself to be something that he is not, especially with his insatiable and uncontrollable bloodlust, to the detriment of his brother. Looking back, it’s questionable and manipulative behavior that has really aged poorly.

Guilted His Brother Into Becoming A Vampire

The Vampire Diaries 10 Things About Stefan That Have Aged Poorly

Stefan and Damon were both in love with the same girl, but Damon didn’t want to be a vampire without Katherine. Because they died with Katherine’s blood inside both of them in 1864, Damon wanted to die, but Stefan convinced him to drink blood and complete his transformation into a vampire.

By coercing Damon into becoming a vampire, not only did Stefan lose his brother’s love, but he also ruined his chances of ever being happy himself because he is never fully able to control his hunger for blood. Stefan forcing him to become a vampire is one of the worst things that happened to Damon in TVD, and illustrates Stefan’s manipulative side that simply doesn’t fly with today’s viewers.

Killed His Father

Stefan and Damon’s father, Giuseppe, was prejudiced against vampires and hated what Katherine turned his sons into. However, he was still their father. Stefan, knowing this, still killed their father in cold blood without hesitation.

Giuseppe arguably failed him as a father, but Stefan never tried to step up and be the better person. Instead, he stooped lower and reaped his revenge in a completely unforgivable way.

Left Elena Without A Partner During Miss Mystic Falls

One of the best moments in the series is when Damon steps in to dance with Elena during Miss Mystic Falls, but this only happens because Stefan is on a blood binge.

He behaved abhorrently during this whole competition and even chased down another Miss Mystic Falls competitor in hopes of draining her and killing her for his own pleasure. Stefan also makes it known that he hates dancing and rarely ever graces his loving girlfriend, Elena, with a dance. His poor treatment of Elena is exemplified by this chain of events and looking back, it’s no wonder that Elena chose her relationship with Damon.

Stalks And Tries To Date A High Schooler

Though Stefan died and was reborn at 17, he’s technically almost 160 when he meets Elena. Not to mention, he actively stalks her out when he notices that she looks exactly like Katherine.

He makes Elena feel overwhelmingly desired, but it’s entirely fabricated because his motive to get to know her only comes from her resemblance to his past love. As a love story, it’s more of a power imbalance than Ezra and Aria’s relationship on Pretty Little Liars, which is saying something.

Went On A Ripper Binge

The Vampire Diaries 10 Things About Stefan That Have Aged Poorly

Stefan is always, somehow, trying to battle his addiction to blood and his need to kill victims to feel some kind of satisfaction. However, his methods are never successful.

He goes off the rails in season 1 for a while, then again at the end of season 2, and at the beginning of season 3, he lets his bargain with Klaus take the blame for his ripper binge across the southern Atlantic coast. What’s worse is that he rarely takes responsibility for his destructive behavior in a meaningful or genuine way.

He Never Honored Elena’s Wishes When She Didn’t Want To Be Saved

The Vampire Diaries 10 Things About Stefan That Have Aged Poorly

Elena is always at the center of attention in The Vampire Diaries. In season 2 Klaus, whose actions have also aged poorly, tries to sacrifice her so that he can get rid of the curse that subdues his wolf side.

Elena, knowing that other people in her life will be in danger, decides to give herself over willingly so that everyone else lives. Stefan, upon realizing this, keeps her from honoring this promise. His selfish decision to keep Elena alive at any cost ultimately leads to Jenna, Jeremy, John, and Bonnie all dying at different points in the series to protect her.

Almost Drove Elena Purposely Off The Bridge Her Parents Died On

The Vampire Diaries 10 Things About Stefan That Have Aged Poorly

While his humanity is shut off and he is angry with Elena for growing closer to Damon, Stefan makes a scary choice in attempting to kill Elena by crashing on the same bridge her parents died on.

Elena yells at him, understandably, after this frightening moment, but he never fully grasps and apologizes for doing this and hurting her. As someone who sees himself as an empath, he lacks those characteristics in this particular situation and many more across TVD’s eight seasons.

Kept Track Of All Of His Victims

One of the creepiest things that Stefan has ever done in The Vampire Diaries is keeping track of all his victims by scratching their names into the walls in his old apartment from the 1920s.

Not only is this something that only serial killers do, but it shows how rather than regretting his kills, he revels in remembering their deaths. It’s by far one of the worst things Stefan does in the series and it makes him really difficult to watch – let alone empathize with and root for – when fans re-visit the show.
