Marvel’s mutants hate the Scarlet Witch, but in the latest issue of Strange Academy, Wanda gets an unusual invitation to visit Krakoa.

XMen Confirm Scarlet Witch Was Invited To Krakoa

Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, is an Avenger, the sister to Quicksilver, and was once assumed to be both a mutant and a daughter of Magneto. A powerful sorceress in her own right, she’s currently a teacher at the Strange Academy. For a long time her origin story suggested she was a mutant with reality bending abilities, but she was retconned by Marvel as a real witch, thus being labeled as “the Pretender” in the Hickman era of X-Men comics. But in Strange Academy #5, Wanda got an email that could indicate a new development in her relationship with Mutantkind.

The Scarlet Witch has become extremely infamous on the island of Krakoa, and in the world of mutants in general. Ever since The House of M back in 2005, Wanda has been seen as a sort of devil in the eyes of mutants, even before she was ousted for not being one herself. She had used her powers to rob thousands of mutants, the majority of the mutant population, of their abilities, seemingly permanently. To have permanently altered reality like that, all but eradicating most of the mutant population, made her public enemy #1, a prejudice which lingered even after the Pheonix Force re-empowered Marvel’s mutants. Since its founding, the people of Krakoa have loathed Wanda, especially since Marvel’s AXIS event revealed she’d never been one of them in the first place, and she’s been spending much more time in the magical corners of Marvel’s world. Apparently, however, that was by choice.

Recently, Wanda has been teaching in the pages of Strange Academy, diving deeper into her magic, and embracing the sorceress that she is. Her relationship to the mutants has been severed and remains extremely strained. Especially now that Krakoa exists and the mutants have their own civilization forming, it makes sense that they’d want less and less to do with Wanda Maximoff… or so readers would think. They are very exclusive about who is allowed to Krakoa, making it so that only mutants can pass through their teleportation gates. Even Deadpool got his butt handed to him when he finagled his way through. But now it seems as if their gates may be opening for her, but how and why is a mystery. In the latest issue of Strange Academy, she got an email from Beast that began “I know you’re not TECHNICALLY a mutant, but I’d LOVE for you to try a Krakoa gate…” The question is, is this a real invite from the mutant nation, or just an insensitive experiment to test the accuracy of their gates and see if someone whose mangled DNA once passed for mutant can game the system?

At this point, it seems impossible and completely outlandish for Marvel to once again retcon Scarlet Witch and somehow find a way to make her a mutant again; but if that isn’t what they’re planning to do, then what do Beast and his fellow mutants have planned for the Scarlet Witch? She’s an extremely powerful sorceress and they’ve learned that she should not be trifled with. Plus, she’s found her place at Strange Academy. On the other hand, Charles Xavier’s Krakoa has given mutants the ability to heal old wounds, even with their worst enemies, so it’s possible Wanda’s old allies sincerely want to build bridges. So, is she now to be a pawn in the mutants’ newest experiment, or do they want to make amends? Most importantly, will Wanda even accept their invitation to begin with? Considering Hank’s email didn’t seem to be the first time he’s contacted her about the matter, it looks like the Scarlet Witch won’t be so easily swayed by the possible olive branch.
