Elena Gilbert’s life was unexpected and adventurous in The Vampire Diaries but every now and then it had some questionable style choices. Elena, her vampire counterparts, best friends, and enemies all experienced some kind of run-in with the supernatural and they were not always wearing outfits that were beneficial to that lifestyle.

Closets full of black clothes, leather jackets, and fancy dresses and heels, seem like a good idea until someone has to fight off a pack of werewolves or an original family of vampires. Too many times The Vampire Diaries characters are unexpectedly running, reaching, jumping, climbing, and covered in dirt or blood. It wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t look cool while doing it but their style choices aren’t always practical.

10 Stefan’s Season 1 Layers

Stefan isn’t one to be caught without layers on but he took the zip-hoodie and flannel too far when he didn’t even button the sleeves. Stefan’s outfits typically give off the vampire style, but this was the exception. After all the years of layers and cravats and scarves, one would think he knew better than to leave any button undone.

The carelessness he gave off when he left the button loose could have led to getting caught on something or just a simple loss in aerodynamics. Stefan should stick to the v-neck and crew tees paired with a light jacket.

9 Damon’s Leather Jackets

Damon Salvatore’s signature look is the leather jackets he sports for practically every occasion. His style doesn’t change throughout the seasons so this impractical outfit could go for any moment in Damon’s eternal life. The audience witnesses the various perils the characters face and somehow Damon never rips a sleeve or breaks a zipper.

He maintains his style but the practicality is still remiss. Leather jackets are known for their toughness so viewers could see how they would seem like an obvious outfit choice but the one thing they are not known for is a range of motion. If there is one thing vampires need, it’s the ability to move and move quickly.

8 Elena’s Long Sleeves At A Car Wash

In the series’ fifth episode, Elena wears a burgundy, long sleeve, fitted top over a second, not-so-fitted, tank top and struggles to pull it off after Carolina shames her and Stefan for not showing enough skin at the “Sexy Suds Car Wash.”

Elena’s style is consistently modest until later seasons so it was no surprise that she wore something to cover herself at the car wash but she could have just chosen a looser shirt or a cardigan that slips off. But that wouldn’t be the comedic teen awkwardness they were going for.

7 Rebekah’s 80’s Attire

After a high school party not going as planned, Rebekah still tried to make the best of it and donned what she considered a nice ’80s strapless dress with leggings, beads, and a fedora. She even topped it off with chunky earrings and bracelets. An impractical choice mostly because of the hat that obviously is ditched later on in the night.

Being an Original, Rebekah, more than anyone probably knows her way around any outfit mishaps that may happen. So the audience can chalk this up to simple party-style basics where the characters just hope for the best possible scenario. The one thing the leg warmers were good for was holding that dagger, so it at least had one positive.

6 Bonnie’s Green Dress

Bonnie Bennett’s style varied the most throughout the early seasons but also developed as she did. She started by practically mirroring Elena’s outfits in layers and jewelry but eventually grew into an independent witch-like style that she claimed as her own.

Most notably in her witch fashion phase, she wore this green dress to meet with Elena in her sleep-phase in season 6. Its impracticality comes from knowing that she was just in an all-out brawl at a wedding and still chooses a flowing, lace, loose-front gown to a semi-funeral where anything could happen. It was cute but not the most ideal for a group of people that are always fighting off an unexpected visitor.

5 Rebekah’s White Outfit

A cute summer outfit to be sure, but if there is one thing that doesn’t go well with vampirism, it’s the color white. One drop of blood from feeding and that flowing white dress would stand out in an instant. Rebekah’s style is typically whatever is trending; After over 1000 years of living through different eras of clothing, she can adapt relatively well.

This may not be the most impractical choice of the series but for someone who hasn’t quite adjusted to the unexpected fighting and feeding life in Mystic Falls, Rebekah was brave with this one.

4 Matt’s Denim Over A Cast

Matt Donovan always represented the small-town hopeless romantic that viewers pitied but they also wanted to see him happy. He fulfilled his role in the fashion department as well, always sporting jock attire like a letterman jacket or a nice plaid button-up with boot-cut jeans to show that he was popular but lovable.

A fashion faux pas he made was continuing to wear those button-ups while he had a cast wider than the sleeves. It wasn’t just that he did it once but he wore that style of shirt multiple times while having the cast and he somehow rolled the sleeves over it.

3 Katherine’s Heel Collection

Katherine’s fashion sense was the exact opposite of Elena’s. It was black, tight, and usually capped off with heels. One of the dead giveaways when Katherine first showed up in season 2 and impersonated Elena was not only the curly hair and darker wardrobe but the heels that Elena didn’t normally wear aside from special occasions.

The idea that she could get away with it without wearing a more “Elena” wardrobe was already unrealistic. But that continued when she met with Damon, on a not-so-sturdy stone sidewalk, a few episodes later and exemplified her inability to care about what events might come her way in the case of running or protecting herself.

2 Caroline’s Knit Shrug & Scarf

Caroline always gave off the stylish-girl vibes but she was still young in season one and definitely unsure how to dress when covering up vampire bites. Viewers could normally catch Caroline in pastels and florals to compliment her fair skin and blonde hair, and the Founder’s Party was no different.

The knit shrug paired with the scarf to cover her multiple vampire bites was a decent idea but not the most stylish and very impractical considering Elena saw them without even trying. The scarf wasn’t wide enough to cover the edges of Damon’s bites on Caroline’s neck and the knit had wide enough holes that Elena knew to look for more bites once she realized what was going on.

1 Elena’s Denim Dress

Elena’s style has grown with her throughout the seasons and as she has learned to work with her new vampire abilities so has her style. So when the audience started to see her wearing more heels and less layered tank tops with zip-up hoodies, it was no surprise.

The most impractical outfit she wore was in season 6. She wore a denim button-up, bodycon-style dress with heeled boots to stalk her victims at the border of Mystic Falls. She may have been better on her feet as a vampire but that dress and those shoes were not meant for the chase.
