Rick Grimes was often the leader of the survivors, guiding and keeping his friends alive. That doesn’t mean he’d survive an actual zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead 10 Reasons Why Rick Grimes Would’ve Died In A Real Zombie Apocalypse

Without Rick Grimes, The Walking Dead would not have been able to last as long as it has done and that much is obvious. However, while he may be the sheriff that we all hold a special place for in our hearts, we don’t think he’s quite as invincible as the show paints him out to be.

In actuality, we’re of the belief that Rick probably would’ve died at several points throughout the course of the show. While we do believe he’s a complete and utter badass, we can’t lie to ourselves and that’s why we’re going to list our reasons now.

10 Trusting The Wrong People

While Rick usually has pretty solid judgment in regard to new people coming into his life, sometimes, it seems like he lets his guard down just a little bit. The ‘trash’ people caught him off guard on several occasions, Terminus proved to be one big lie, and most importantly of all, he probably should’ve wound up dead at the hands of Shane.

If Shane truly wanted him dead, then in all likelihood, he would’ve taken the opportunity when it was presented to him as opposed to dragging it out and allowing Rick to get the upper hand.

9 Early Season Mentality

As time went on, it’s safe to say that Rick Grimes got to a point where you could define him as ‘too far gone’. In season one and two, however, that wasn’t the case. He wanted to try and do the right thing at all costs, which often caused him to make a few errors in judgment.

One such example would be the barn which, despite being full of walkers, he was perfectly happy to help Hershel preserve. If you put that version of Rick in The Governor’s world, he wouldn’t survive.

8 The Horse Scene

Once Rick decided to leave Morgan’s house and find his family, he made the decision to go into the heart of Atlanta on the back of a horse, no less. At one stage Rick is overwhelmed by the walkers, eventually falling off of his horse.

While he got lucky with Glenn finding him inside the tank, in the real world, we just can’t allow our minds to drift off to a point where that would be feasible. The numbers game was against him, and he probably should’ve died on that day.

7 Overconfidence

It’s tough when overconfidence turns around and bites you, and there were many instances in the show’s run where that probably should’ve happened to Rick.

This certainly comes to mind in the fifth season when the gang pops up at Alexandria, and beyond that, when they start to settle down in the sixth season. It’s one of the great periods in the show’s run, but we just feel like he thought he was untouchable. In reality that simply wasn’t the case, and he probably should’ve paid the price with his life.

6 Fatigue

The zombie apocalypse is going to wear you down, and that’s going to be true whether you are the Incredible Hulk, Rick Grimes or, we don’t know, someone like Enid.

Fatigue sets in and takes over, and your decision making can be compromised. We struggle to believe that Grimes would be able to avoid that fate, mainly because he always looks like he’s tired – which makes sense, given that he probably gets an average of two hours sleep every single night. There are walkers waiting at every turn, after all.

5 Depression

It’s not a guarantee that someone is going to go through a rough spell of depression in the apocalypse, but if you’ve killed as many walkers and people as Rick Grimes has, then it seems inevitable. This actually did seem to happen on a few occasions for the sheriff, but it never hit him for all too long. He picked himself up, dusted himself off, and got on with the task at hand.

Whether or not it would’ve been that easy when everything around him was crumbling is a different matter altogether.

4 Protecting His Kids

Judith and Carl served as the light in Rick’s life, and at many times during TWD’s run, they were in pretty sticky situations both with and without their father being present.

Rick has done an awful lot to protect them and we need to point that out from the get-go, but if he was truly going to do everything in his power to put their lives before his, then surely he would’ve been the one to perish prior to Carl.

The circumstances surrounding his death may not have ensured that was possible, but there have been too many ‘wrong place, wrong time’ moments for our liking.

3 No Way Out

The odds were against rick during No Way Out and that’s us putting it mildly. While his miraculous act of defiance in trying to kill hundreds of walkers on his own was certainly admirable, we can’t stretch our minds to believe that he would’ve survived.

He was on the front line giving everything he had in the name of protecting Alexandria, desperately trying to ensure that he could protect that place. They got the job done, and if you’d bet on that happening in the real world, you’d be awfully rich once the dust had settled.

2 Negan

If Negan was smart, and he really wanted to win the war, he would’ve put an end to Rick Grimes when he had the chance.

As opposed to leaving the leader of the group alive after they’d killed so many of his men, it would’ve made a whole lot more sense for him to take Rick out. The remainder of the group, logically speaking, simply would not have been able to cope with the devastation of the situation – and almost certainly would’ve fallen in line with Negan as a result.

1 Lack Of Resources

At many points, Rick was forced to fight back against the obstacles in his way with nothing more than a pistol and a hatchet – or, at some points, just one of the two.

When you combine that with Daryl seemingly having an endless supply of arrows and Michonne having pinpoint accuracy with her samurai sword, it was slightly too ‘out there’ for many viewers to stomach.

He’s been outmatched and overpowered multiple times during the show’s run, but as a result of being the main character, he has been immune to the eventual consequences.
