The Walking Dead: 10 Things About Alexandria That Don’t Make Sense

A rare safe zone in The Walking Dead’s universe, Alexandria has been through a lot over the show’s run, and not all of it makes sense.

AMC’s highly popular series The Walking Dead has been on the air since October 2010 and continues to grow in popularity with all of their new spin-off series and out of nowhere storyline changes. However, one thing that hasn’t changed about the series is the location first seen in season five known as Alexandria the Safe-Zone. Since it has been a major location for the show for the last six seasons, it has seen many new changes, different leaders, and destruction.

There are also a few things about the location that just don’t quite make sense about the location or the citizens of the community.

10 The Outside Walls

There is no secret that the safe-zone, also known as Alexandria, is a gorgeous and classy place from looking at the inside. But one major thing that really stands out from its first appearance in season five, is the strange and even a bit creepy walls that only have support beams holding them upwards.

The way they looked made it seem more like the citizens were trying to keep their people inside of the walls rather than trying to keep the walkers and dangerous people out.

9 The Citizens Were Oblivious To The Apocolypse

After Rick and the others were accepted to live in Alexandria, he soon started to realize that none of the citizens around him really knew what was happening out in the world and it seemed like they didn’t care at all.

Rick soon spoke out to the people of the safe zone and tried to inform them of the real-life dangers outside the wall along with letting them know that they should learn how to protect themselves and grow out of their now sheltered lives. Of course, they turned a blind eye to his speech and then realized that he was right after several walkers entered the safe zone on accident.

8 They Had No Real Laws

In the real world, domestic abuse is an incredibly big deal and something that people deserve to be accounted for, but not in Alexandria. In season five, after Rick was made constable of Alexandria, he started to notice more of a pattern between Pete Anderson’s abusive behavior towards his wife (and Rick’s later love interest) Jessie and their children Sam and Ron.

When Rick tried to have something done in order to punish Pete for his actions, his idea was quickly shut down by Alexandria’s leader Deanna. The zone had no laws in place nor any proof for Rick to be able to attack a citizen of their close community.

7 Citizens Didn’t Know How To Protect Themselves

After Rick was approved to kill Pete after his killing of Deanna’s husband, Reg, he and Morgan set out to get rid of the bodies. During this trip, they discovered a large group of walkers being blocked in by semi-trucks that were keeping them from breaking through and destroying Alexandria along with all of the citizens within it.

This led Rick to alert the people of the news and let them know that they should start learning how to defend themselves in preparation for the worst-case scenario. Since the people of Alexandria lived in their own little worlds and without a care about the apocalypse, it wasn’t too shocking for them to not know how to protect themselves against walkers.

6 The Walker Invasion

Once the citizens start to learn ways of defending themselves against walkers invading their safe zone, they quickly learn that the best way to walk through a huge invasion without being seen or eaten. As seen in the second episode of the first season, Rick and Glenn covered their clothes in dead zombie guts and made the smell so strong that they were able to walk through the entire zombie crowd.

When the Alexandria citizens attempt the same idea, it begins to work out perfectly, until Jessie’s son, Sam, starts to freak out and almost causes everyone to get killed along with him. Although he is a young boy, he should have been smart enough to know that when you are in a dangerous situation you have to keep moving and not just worry about yourself.

5 The Lack Of Communication

Throughout all previous seasons of The Walking Dead, it is very common to see main characters group up and go on their own adventures while leaving others to do their own thing. But in the small zone of Alexandria, why wouldn’t these characters want to be able to communicate with the citizens while they are on their journeys just in case something goes wrong?

They are living in an apocalyptic world with zombies at most every corner along with many other dangerous people that they will likely meet while on their journey; therefore, for the people of Alexandria to not hand out any sort of communication devices for them to use every time they leave doesn’t make a lot of sense.

4 Paul Rovia aka “Jesus”

In season five, while on a supply run after the walker invasion, Rick and Daryl run into Paul Rovia, also known as Jesus, who was from the Hilltop Colony. Normally the two of them would have been a lot more skeptical about meeting a new and strange character out in the outside world, but not this time.

The citizens of Alexandria were also quick to accept Jesus in their safe zone and made him a side leader since he was able to provide weapons for his stay. This seemed really out of character, as Rick and Daryl would usually interrogate a stranger before bringing them back to Alexandria with those they were trying to protect.

3 The Memorial Wall

With all of the many deaths of beloved characters on the show, Alexandria citizens creating a memorial wall inside their wall gates was a sentimental feature that many fans truly loved. It was created shortly after The Wolves attacked Alexandria and included the names of those who were killed or lost.

But, of course, this sweet gesture didn’t last for too long since it was quickly forgotten about and never shown on screen again. Perhaps it could have been torn down by other attackers, but it still could have been rebuilt to show respect for those who had died.

2 The Many Destructions

After being attacked by countless zombies, groups of dangerous people like The Wolves and The Whisperers, Alexandria’s citizens are always able to fix all of their destructions and rebuild their safe zone like new. But just how many more attacks will the place be able to take before there won’t be anything else to renew?

Fingers crossed that there won’t be any more major attacks on the area. Unfortunately, knowing the series history, there will likely be much more to unfold leaving Alexandria to either clean up the leftover mess or to up and find a new location to make their own.

1 It’s Ever-Changing Leaders

In season five, when Rick and the gang arrived at Alexandria, the zone was being led by Deanna Monroe who after first meeting Rick was quite hesitant to let him stay inside of Alexandria’s walls. Of course, over time she began to learn that he was right about most things and that her people should have listened to him from the beginning.

After Deanna’s death in season six, Rick became the leader of the safe zone. After his disappearance in season nine, the role was then given to Michonne. Now in season ten, after Michonne has also left Alexandria, Father Gabriel has now taken her place in guiding the citizens. All of these changes of leadership over the seasons were not only hard to keep up with but way overdone.
