The Walking Dead 5 Characters That Negan Could Call Friends (& His 5 Worst Enemies)

Negan started out one of the most intensely hated characters in The Walking Dead. Making his debut by viciously murdering some of the most beloved characters on the show earned him more enemies than friends, but over the years, he has shockingly grown to become a genuine fan favorite.

Negan has a turbulent relationship with most people that he meets, but he has recently made attempts to be friendly with members of Alexandria. Just because he might see them as a friend, doesn’t mean that they feel the same way, but with such a long list of enemies, he has to take what he can get.

10 Friend: Judith Grimes

Negan’s first words to Judith are “look at this little angel”, and it’s safe to say that his opinion has not changed. Judith is likely the only person that he genuinely enjoyed talking with during all of those years of isolation in the Alexandria jail cell.

Happy to spend his days helping her with math homework or trying to bestow life advice on the younger Grimes, he clearly made an impression. Judith sees him as a human being that has done bad things, but who doesn’t want to do those bad things anymore, and that is not a gift that Negan is given very often.

9 Worst Enemy: Dwight

Dwight’s role with the Saviors was as Negan’s trusted, right-hand man, but that proves very little except for what a twisted piece of work Negan was back at the Sanctuary.

Having taken Dwight’s wife as a “wife” of his own, Negan not only boasted to the man about his relationship with her, but he also burnt Dwight’s face for trying to escape in the first place. Dwight did not have the power he needed to overthrow Negan without putting Sherry at risk, but the moment that he had the chance, he betrayed him.

8 Friend: Carol Peletier

The jury is still out on whether or not Carol and Negan will ever be true friends, but she did cut a deal with him that allowed him to prove his allegiance to Alexandria and earn his way out of solitary confinement.

That makes her a notch higher on Negan’s list than many of the hostile members of the town. Carol does not see him and his worth in black and white, but in shades of gray, willing to admit when he would be useful to the group, especially when it came to taking out Alpha and the Whisperers.

7 Worst Enemy: Rick Grimes

Negan and Rick have never had a dynamic other than as enemies. Though Rick may have thrown the figurative first punch in Negan’s mind by killing his men as a favor to Hilltop, Negan responded with what led to an all-out war between their rivaling groups.

He subjected them to grief, loss of resources, and psychological torture until Rick was finally able to get the upper hand and defeat him. Were it not for Carl’s last wishes, Rick almost certainly would have killed Negan.

6 Friend: Alpha

Negan went into his relationship with Alpha knowing that he was going to one day betray and kill her. Though he followed through on his side of the deal, by living with the Whisperers and developing a relationship with their twisted leader, he grew to somewhat like and respect her.

The survivor in him that did whatever he had to in order to hold onto leadership and keep his group fed was impressed with what she had done, skin masks and zombie walks and all. There are parts of her that he hated, such as her treatment of Lydia, but he didn’t like having to kill her.

5 Worst Enemy: Michonne

Michonne and Negan have never had an amicable relationship. She has seen the darkest sides of him, and she knows exactly what he is capable of in the worst of ways when it comes to violence and cruelty.

Though she expressed appreciation when he saved Judith’s life in the snowstorm, that doesn’t mean that she trusts him or that she would want ever to truly make amends. She was perfectly happy to keep him locked up and under a watchful eye.

4 Friend: Lydia

Lydia leaves her life with the Whisperers because of her mother’s cruel abuse, but when she arrives in Alexandria, she meets another obstacle when she is harshly bullied by the teenagers that live there.

Negan has a soft spot for kids and he understands what it feels like to be an outsider. He doesn’t hesitate to be there for her when she needs it, even to the point of risking his life to save hers when the bullying went too far. Despite the unconventional nature of their friendship because of his role in her mother’s death, Lydia and Negan have a unique trust between them.

3 Worst Enemy: Beta

Negan never had a problem with Beta, but he sure did love to push his buttons during his time with the Whisperers. Furious with his big mouth, crude jokes, and his closeness with Alpha, Beta certainly would have killed Negan if he thought that his Alpha would allow it.

Instead, his blind loyalty to her sealed her fate as well as his. Though not much is known about Beta’s past, in a twist of irony, Negan was the one that recognized him for his true identity when his mask was torn off during his death.

2 Friend: Carl Grimes

An ex-gym teacher, Negan tends to form the strongest bonds with children and has been outspoken about wishing that he had kids of his own. One of the first people that he really took a liking to was Carl Grimes.

Negan genuinely respected Carl. He may have threatened his life and limbs a couple of times, but he liked him. Consistently impressed with his bravery, Negan went out of his way to take him home after Carl tried to kill him. Later in the series, he was moved by his letter calling for peace, and he cried when Rick told him that Carl had died from a Walker bite.

1 Worst Enemy: Maggie Rhee

Step aside, Rick. Maggie is definitely Negan’s number one enemy. Pregnant and terrified, she watched the love of her life be brutally murdered before her eyes as Negan laughed and made fun of Glenn as he died.

That trauma has never left Maggie, and even though she has agreed to move back to Alexandria for the good of her family, she has not forgiven or forgotten what Negan stole from her and from little Hershel. There is no telling whether she will ever take revenge on him, but it’s probably best not to expect a happy truce in their future.
