The Walking Dead How Daryl & Carols SpinOff Can Save The Franchise

The main Walking Dead series is ending in 2022, but the franchise will continue, and its upcoming Daryl and Carol spinoff could be just what it needs. On the fateful day that The Walking Dead’s series finale airs, it’ll truly be the end of a TV era. The vast majority of TV shows don’t even get picked up for season two, much less three. To end after an extremely successful 11-season run is what everyone involved with the TV business lies awake at night dreaming about.

The Walking Dead is also the rare long-running show set to go out on top, provided the ratings don’t drastically fall between now and 2022. While much has been made of Walking Dead’s steep ratings drop since season 6, what’s crazy about that is the fact that even with such a big fall, the show remains at or near the top of the ratings on a consistent basis. It appears that the millions of viewers still left are the lifers, those who’ve stuck with Walking Dead since 2010, and will remain by its side until the end.

But even after the final 30 episodes of The Walking Dead have aired, fans have no reason to switch out of zombie mode, as AMC has already confirmed a spinoff starring Daryl and Carol. Some might be wondering if The Walking Dead really needs another addition to its universe, but we would argue that not only does it, the new show could be what saves the franchise.

Why The Walking Dead Needs A New Spin-Off

While it’s too early on in development to know exactly what creative form The Walking Dead’s spinoff centered on Daryl Dixon and Carol Pelletier will take, we do know that current Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang will be the one guiding it, effectively ensuring that it’ll be an extension of the main series. Considering the aforementioned continued popularity of The Walking Dead, extending it directly seems like a wise move. Some may argue, why not just keep the flagship show going, but at this point, it’s grown and changed so much that it’s starting to become unrecognizable when compared to the earlier seasons. The Walking Dead deserves a conclusive, satisfying ending, without years more of dragging that out.

However, producing a spinoff centered on Daryl and Carol will allow fans to stay connected to the universe they’ve come to love, and at least two of their favorite characters within it, as they embark on a new adventure. Change is good, but The Walking Dead’s end will leave a void to be filled, and try as it might, Fear the Walking Dead has never approached the original in viewership. Also, upcoming spinoff The Walking Dead: World Beyond may be limiting itself by targeting a teenage audience, and has already said it won’t go more than two seasons. At that point, Daryl and Carol can step in to keep The Walking Dead storyline going, but without the baggage of being season 12.

The Problems The Carol & Daryl Spin-Off Needs To Address

Despite The Walking Dead’s enduring popularity, it’s not really argued that the show has been in the past, or currently is, a flawless enterprise. With the spinoff centered on Daryl and Carol, The Walking Dead franchise can show that it’s heard these complaints, and wants to change. One of the most common points of umbrage is how ever since The Governor’s rise during the prison storyline, The Walking Dead has often revolved around what its lead villain is up to, and become consumed by the idea of an all-out battle between the two sides. There’s nothing wrong with a good fight, but there’s so much more that could be explored about post-apocalyptic life than just “let’s have another war.”

The Walking Dead can also sometimes be too gleefully nihilistic for its own good, such as with the infamous episode where the audience was forced to watch as Negan graphically smashed Glenn and Abraham’s brains in like their heads were watermelons. Sure, nobody ever wants The Walking Dead to be a ray of sunshine, but maybe try not having 90 percent of the people the heroes meet turn out to be evil murderers that want to do them harm.

How To Make Carol & Daryl Different Enough To Save TWD

As mentioned above, there are so many other things that The Walking Dead’s Carol and Daryl spinoff could spotlight besides retaining the flagship series’ penchant of hopping from war to war. Some of these areas have been touched on somewhat in prior seasons, but are ripe for expansion and examination. Why not look at how Daryl, Carol and whoever they’re living with by then cope with trying to rebuild a functioning human society, or if they don’t try, explore why they gave up on the idea? Look at the backstabbing and power games that can take place among people who all have different ideas about sharing leadership.

Have the characters suffer famine and pestilence, and battle to get back to full strength with the help of doctors without classical training. Basically, do something, anything different, and do it for a long period. Take advantage of not being the same show anymore, and set new expectations. Or, if one still wanted to keep things action-oriented, have the characters travel around again, encountering new areas with new threats. Dramatically, Rick and company getting to Alexandria has become a big weight on The Walking Dead’s neck. While real-life budget concerns might limit locations, take the show on the road as much as possible, and offer new sights and sounds on a consistent basis.

Will It Work?

At this early stage, it’s tricky to try and predict if The Walking Dead’s Daryl and Carol spinoff will work or not, and it also depends on what one means by work. Ratings-wise, Daryl and Carol are such popular characters that they’re probably guaranteed to earn a decent-sized audience. Quality-wise, if Kang and company heed the idea of doing something new, and innovating the franchise while balancing that with not chucking out what works already, there’s no reason to believe the spinoff can’t succeed.
