Friday at San Diego Comic Con is dominated by television and the ruling series has for years been AMC’s The Walking Dead. This year will likely be no different, though it could be argued that this year at Comic-Con the acclaimed zombie series will have to work a little harder to please its hordes of fans. Months may have passed since The Walking Dead’s season 6 cliffhanger, but that startling cut to black still stings.

That cliffhanger has been a bitter pill for fans to swallow, but producer Greg Nicotero insists the cliffhanger “propels” the show; and even without knowing whom it was at the business end of Negan’s barb-wired baseball bat, the scene served its purpose: “establishing that the world isn’t what everybody thinks it is.” That will be the through-line when it comes to season 7, too, standing as a wake-up call for Rick and his fellow survivors that zombies are no longer their biggest concern. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan has also been promoted to a series regular, so expect him to antagonize the residents of Alexandria for season 7 and possibly beyond.

During The Walking Dead’s Comic-Con panel today, the first trailer for season 7 was revealed, and though it continues to play coy about Negan’s victim, it does hint at another thrilling season for television’s number one, post-apocalyptic drama. Give it a watch above!

After again teasing us with the identity of Negan’s victim, and running through all the possible candidates, this trailer switches gears to focus on what new characters and places are coming in season 7. There’s The Kingdom and its leader, Ezekiel and his tiger, Shiva – who for being CGI on a television budget doesn’t look half bad – as well as the residents of The Hilltop, many of whom are expected play larger roles this season.

The reason for all the new faces isn’t mentioned outright in the trailer, but as it happens in the comics, in the aftermath of Negan murdering one of Rick’s people, all out war breaks out between The Saviors and a coalition of colonies (Alexandria, The Hilltop, and The Kingdom). Season 7 may not reach that level of intensity just yet, but by introducing The Kingdom and expanding The Hilltop’s role, it certainly seems season 7 is aiming to pit Negan and The Saviors against Rick and everyone else.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 23rd, 2016.
