The Witcher 3 Pros & Cons Of Choosing Yennefer

Monster slaying and collecting crowns aside, one of Geralt’s central conflicts in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is his love life, and the choice between settling down with one of two sorceresses: Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg. The latter is technically the canon choice given her role in the wider fiction, but choosing Yennefer will come with its own set of pros and cons that players may want to consider before making a decision.

Yennefer and Geralt have a complicated relationship that has spanned the course of nearly twenty years, and choosing to pursue a relationship with her is an impactful in-game decision for The Witcher 3. They initially met because of an altercation with a djinn (or genie), which Geralt inadvertently used to bind himself together with Yennefer. This became a constant point of contention between the two, as neither was sure whether their feelings for one another were real or simply a byproduct of the wish Geralt made.

One of the best things about choosing Yennefer over Triss in The Witcher 3 could also perhaps be one of the worst: Her and Geralt’s complicated past. This makes Yennefer an integral part of the story and gives her more substantial in-game interaction and romance content. Triss and Geralt’s relationship is a touch more behind-the-scenes than his and Yennefer’s, which has a copious amount of in-game dialogue and related side-quests. She is also a big part of Ciri’s life and is something of a stand-in mother figure. All of this time spent together creates a deep and genuine bond between the two that makes them feel like a more fleshed-out and complete relationship than Geralt and Triss, despite Triss’ more considerable screen time in the previous games.

How Choosing Yennefer Affects The Game

Ultimately, there aren’t major changes based on this particular romantic choice, but it does mean that the sometimes fraught relationship between Geralt and Yennefer in The Witcher 3 will continue, troubled and sometimes toxic as it is. Bother are strong-willed and independent people, leading them to be less than understanding of each other at times. This can lead to some abrasive interactions between the two, and frequent fights. Although Geralt and Yennefer end up breaking the djinn’s spell and finding their true feelings for one another, it never quite feels like that alone will fix their ideological differences. Their moral codes don’t often line up, leading them to separate for years at a time before once again finding one another. It also means that Triss, who players may have had more experience with from the first two games (especially if they’ve transferred a save file), will be heartbroken as a result. If players complete the Blood and Wine expansion, Yennefer will be the one to end up with Geralt at his new property – unless players tried to romance both Triss and Yennefer, which will lead to Ciri or Dandelion showing up instead.

But there is no expressly correct choice for romance in The Witcher 3. Both Yennefer and Triss are interesting and complex characters on their own, and players are free to ignore romance options altogether. Though they will miss out on some in-game lore and dialogue, the story can still be completed sans-relationship. Both Yennefer and Geralt remain equally as interesting whether together or apart, so there really is no wrong decision.
