The Witcher 3’s next-gen update, previously scheduled for release at some point during Q2 of 2022, will no longer be able to release during that window, and it’s unclear when it will come out at all.

CD Projekt Red announced via the official Witcher series Twitter account that the enhanced edition of The Witcher 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Windows will be delayed once again. The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077’s next-gen updates were both given tentative Q2 2022 release dates back in October of 2021. While Cyberpunk 2077’s update was surprise-released in February, The Witcher 3 will not make its intended release date.

CD Projekt Red was unable to provide an updated timeline for the game’s ultimate release, postponing it indefinitely. The delay is the result of CDPR moving the development of the update completely to its in-house team, meaning the remainder of the work has to be completely re-evaluated. The tweet offers some context to the situation, saying “We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be done and thus have to postpone Q2 release until further notice.” It goes on to promise an update on the situation as soon as possible.

The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 were both meant to receive next-gen upgrades in 2021, but following the advice of the teams working on the respective titles, both were delayed to 2022. With The Witcher 3 now being under the supervision of an entirely new team, and with CD Projekt Red’s troubling Cyberpunk 2077 launch still in recent memory, the decision to delay the update makes sense.

The Witcher 3 remains playable on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S thanks to native backward compatibility, but while it awaits an update, the game cannot take advantage of any of the hardware’s exclusive features or processing power. When the game does eventually make its way to next-gen platforms, it promises to provide a smoother and better experience overall, although console players will still not be able to enjoy the absolute heights of The Witcher 3 mods — anyone with a desire to watch Geralt of Rivia snowboard through The Witcher 3’s map will be restricted to PC.

The current, pre-update version of The Witcher 3 is natively available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows. The updated edition will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Windows.
