The Witcher 4 no longer needs Geralt of Rivia as a protagonist, as prequels or sequels could focus on characters like Vesemir or Ciri instead.

The Witcher 4s Protagonist Shouldnt Be Geralt Of Rivia

CDPR’s The Witcher series features Geralt of Rivia as the protagonist of the trilogy, but The Witcher 4 could move other characters into the spotlight. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt provided a conclusion to Geralt of Rivia’s story with multiple endings. Player choice dictated the outcome of these stories and crafted a satisfying end for the monster slayer. To avoid dragging Geralt’s story on too long and ruining satisfying character development, CDPR should turn its attention to other characters instead.

Part of the beauty of The Witcher’s universe is its world-building and cast of complex companions. While Geralt of Rivia has always held significant sway in the world, his absence (or retirement) could be the motivating force for the growth of other characters. Other Witchers, such as Lambert and Eskel, may need to step up to fill the void left behind by their friend. The sorceress Geralt didn’t romance in Witcher 3 (either Triss, Keira, or Yennefer) could also grow to fulfill another role in the game’s narrative. Geralt’s absence could be the tool needed to revitalize The Witcher’s world and characters – and allow players to explore the universe through other perspectives.

Vesemir has always played a prominent role in Geralt of Rivia’s story. He is the oldest known living Witcher and survived tragedies such as the sacking of Kaer Morhen. Playing Vesemir in an era where Witchers are not dying out, and the Continent is reverted to its former state, could allow players to explore an age that was spoken of in the trilogy. Witchers were rarely welcomed in villages and cities, but Vesemir experienced a short time where that was not the case. Monsters ran amok, and many civilizations required the services of monster slayers to keep the peace. Without Geralt, the Witcher series would be freed from the constraints of his story and explore other chapters of the universe’s history.

The Witcher 4 Could Explore Ciri’s Witcher Ending Or Embrace New Characters

Another significant character of the Witcher universe is Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, more commonly known as Ciri. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt centered around her final fate. Player choices throughout the game dictated her survival and destiny, but one outcome resulted in Ciri becoming a Witcher herself. Arguably one of the better fates for Ciri, as Witcher 4’s main character she could continue the School of the Wolf’s legacy. Geralt of Rivia’s teachings and abilities would survive in Ciri, and the extended lifespan of Witchers could see old characters return to assist in her hunts. Ciri is a deeply beloved part of the Witcher universe, and placing her as the focus of the next game would create an interesting narrative.

The Witcher series could also veer from the formula that previous games have depended on, and allow players to customize their Witchers. Exploring the origins of other Witcher Schools and expanding beyond The Witcher’s main cast could force the franchise to grow beyond its comfort zone. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s open-world developed many parts of the game’s universe, but players only experienced it from the cynical, pessimistic perspective of Geralt of Rivia. Allowing the creation of younger, more hopeful Witchers could revitalize the series with fresh perspectives and experiences.

No matter which protagonist CDPR chooses for The Witcher 4, there are still many plots from the Witcher series that need to be wrapped up. The departure of Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher games is a heavy loss but could encourage further growth of in-game characters and the world. Vesemir, Ciri, or an entirely new Witcher would be perfect candidates to explore the Continent as the next protagonist.
