There’s iconic music during this movie that has stood the test of time, and that is one of the reasons this is such a classic movie musical.

The songs are spliced into the movie throughout in a brilliant way, and there’s a great range of music too. Things go from being incredibly upbeat to slow and emotional, and some of the songs have gone on to become incredibly iconic, but which were the best of the bunch?

11 “The Lollipop Guild”

“The lollipop guild” is an incredibly short song from the movie, therefore it is the worst overall simply because of that. There’s not much going on here, with just three of the Munchkin characters coming in to introduce themselves to Dorothy.

This is a very small moment and one that is very easy to forget, and because of that, it is one that doesn’t have anywhere near as much impact on the overall story as some of the other songs.

10 “Optimistic Voices”

“Optimistic Voices” is another of the more forgettable songs, which is mainly because this isn’t sung by any of the main characters. This song comes when Dorothy and the gang see the wizard’s castle for the first time and they begin to become optimistic that they’re about to get what they want.

When they start heading down the final stretch on the yellow brick road, there is a song put on that is known as “Optimistic Voices,” which brings the feeling of positivity with it. However, it just doesn’t have the same impact as the others because the characters themselves are not signing.

9 “If I Only Had The Nerve”

This number is where The Cowardly Lion is brought into the movie, with this being his number, with all three of Dorothy’s friends being given a song each. However, The Cowardly Lion’s song is the shortest and least impressive of the trio.

Following onto the same beat as the other two songs that Scarecrow and Tin Man sing, this was always going to be enjoyable. However, he doesn’t bring as many solo moments as the others, and it doesn’t stand out as much.

8 “We Thank You Very Sweetly”

The joy that the Munchkins have for Dorothy killing the Wicked Witch is certainly clear, and this song is one of showcasing that. However, this song really feels more like a lead on to “Ding-Dong! The Wicked Witch Is Dead” rather than a big number itself.

While it’s certainly a fun song, it is mainly doing to set up the opening of the movie, with this being the way that Dorothy is explained what has happened in Oz to this point. So, while it serves its purpose, it doesn’t quite have as much joy as other songs.

7 “If I Were King Of The Forest”

This particular song is sung by The Cowardly Lion and is one that is very different from everything else due to its operatic nature. Because of that, this song isn’t for everybody as it’s such a shift in tone, but it’s a fantastic performance and one that suits the character perfectly.

It’s a song full of heart and positivity, with lots of big moments, which certainly makes it one of the most memorable within the movie. However, with it being so different from the rest of the movie, it’s not one that everybody loves.

6 “Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead”

This song is the first moment where Dorothy arrives in Oz and is when the movie really does burst into a life of color and vibrancy. It’s a classic musical moment with lots of characters appearing in sync, all singing together with Dorothy left perplexed about what is happening.

It introduces the world brilliantly though while leaving audiences confused as to why there’s such a positive and upbeat song being sung about someone being killed. However, it’s a great moment that just opens the main portion of the more with a bang.

5 “If Only Had A Heart”

This song is sung in the same style as the other two main characters that join Dorothy (The Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow), but this is certainly a great version. The Tin Man adds a lot of his own character to his version of the song.

His version also benefits from the fact that he actually has the best voice out of the three characters, and that helps to make his song really enjoyable. Adding in Dorothy and Scarecrow’s reactions at different moments, this song is certainly a favorite.

4 “Follow The Yellowbrick Road”

This is one of the most famous musical songs of all time, and one that is very simple but has an incredibly catchy beat and lyrics that will get stuck in your head. This is a great song that sums up the movie nicely, which makes it one of the best.

It’s a song that just works within this setting as it opens up the movie and the world of Oz, setting Dorothy off on her path to the Wizard.

3 “If I Only Had A Brain”

Out of all of the songs that Dorothy’s friends sing along the way, the number that Scarecrow provides is certainly the best of the bunch. This song puts the story of Scarecrow’s issue into the minds of the audience straight away, all while being upbeat and endearing.

Seeing him trying to dance around as he flops about as it happens is quite enjoyable to see as well, which is what makes his character so fun throughout. While the other friend songs follow the same beat and style, this version benefits from being the first and having the most personality involved.

2 “We’re Off To See The Wizard”

This is the song that is reprised countless times throughout the movie, with Dorothy singing this every time she encounters another of her friends. It’s a joyful song that sticks in people’s heads, which is what makes it so good. It also pushes the message of the movie itself throughout.

It’s first sung by the Munchkins and then Dorothy keeps it going during the movie, with this really acting as her calling card throughout the story. It’s upbeat and simple, making it one of the strongest songs in the movie.

When it comes to The Wizard Of Oz, there’s no denying that the most iconic and well-known song of the movie is “Over The Rainbow.” This isn’t just the best song from this movie, but it is one of the greatest musical songs of all time from any movie.
