The XMen Just Proved They Could Defeat Portal’s GLaDOS

From Doctor Doom to the Red Skull to the Green Goblin, Marvel’s heroes aren’t short on megalomaniacal villains with iconic designs and unique and terrifying ways of seeing the world. Sadly, Marvel’s mutants are often targeted by the very worst foes the world has to offer, so it’s a good job the X-Men are ready for opponents who don’t even exist in their franchise.

First appearing in 2007’s puzzle-platform game Portal, GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is a human-hating robot whose prim approach to imprisoning and “testing” the player made her an instant pop-culture icon. Existing within the bowels of the former Aperture Science Facility, the game’s protagonist Chell only had a chance against GLaDOS because she was able to grab a Portal Gun – a device capable of producing two ‘portals,’ with the user able to step through one and emerge from the other, wherever it’s located. Mastering this device, Chell is able to escape GLaDOS’ clutches and turn the robot’s weapons against her, but X-Men member Magik just proved she wouldn’t need any time at all to take down the sardonic villain.

Having recently become a Great Captain of the mutant nation of Krakoa and one of the island’s chief protectors, Magik is more in the spotlight than she’s ever been, enjoying adventures with the X-Men, New Mutants, and Savage Avengers. It’s with this latter team that she just faced the Asgardian dragon Sadurang, attempting to recover the Second Eye of Agamotto. While the fight was actually ended by diplomacy (and a little trickery) it was here that Magik showed a fight with GLaDOS would barely slow her down.

Magik’s mutant power is to create teleportation discs – the equivalent of Portal’s Portal Gun – which pass her and others of her choosing through the Limbo dimension. While time spent in this dimension taught Magik a host of other magical abilities, it’s clear she also practiced with her innate ability, learning all the tricks players discovered were essential for taking down their robotic tormentor.

Magik’s simplest trick is creating a “portal” in front of Sadurang when he breathes fire, redirecting the flames to instead hit him in the back, but she’s also comfortable with more creative uses. Magik interrupts the Black Knight’s potentially lethal fall with a portal that instead sends him flying into the air. Of course, she uses teleportation to get in close and stab Sadurang with her Soulsword, but she also pulls off offensive redirection by turning the Juggernaut’s magically enhanced horizontal momentum into a missile-like plunge that her enemy compares to a blow from Thor.

These moves are familiar to players of Portal and Portal 2, where unconventional travel and the abilities to kill momentum and redirect missiles takes down GLaDOS, but even Magik’s masterstroke echoes the game. Teleporting Sadurang to Limbo and offering him somewhere to sleep, Magik ditches the dragon in the desolate wasteland, echoing the moment from Portal 2 where Chell fires at the moon, stranding villain Wheatley (then in control of GLaDOS’ body) in space.

Portal and its sequel are so beloved by fans because they take a basic premise – simple teleportation – then push the limits of what seems possible, allowing the player to experiment with physics and pull off seemingly impossible feats. Magik’s brawl with Sadurang is similarly clever, making the absolute most of her first power and showing readers how creatively the character can be used. While the issue shows the X-Men member could easily take down Portal’s GLaDOS if needed, the real comparison is the fun the creators of both stories have with what seems like a simple ability.
