Who will Godzilla’s next Monsterverse villain be was Mechagodzilla’s defeat in Godzilla vs. Kong? Thus far, the King of the Monsters has already faced off against the two biggest villains from his rogues’ gallery in Toho’s movies. He took down Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and provided an assist to Kong in the latter’s win over Mechagodzilla at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong.

As things currently stand, it’s currently unclear if Godzilla will get another opponent to fight in the MonsterVerse at all. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a financial disappointment that may have hurt the MonsterVerse’s future, and could also have been the reason why Legendary and Warner Bros. held off on announcing additional movies. However, Godzilla vs. Kong did do well at the box office (given the circumstances). That being said, it’s still hard to say if the studio feels confident enough about the MonsterVerse to keep moving forward with it. If it does, new Godzilla and Kong movies could be confirmed to be in development at some point in the coming weeks or months.

It’s worth wondering in the case of Godzilla in particular who Legendary might pick as his next antagonist after Mechagodzilla, assuming it pulls from an existing Toho property. As noted above, Godzilla’s two greatest villains have already been used, but that’s not a problem. After all, there are plenty of kaiju in Toho’s library that would be appropriate additions for a MonsterVerse movie. There are some though, that have low chances of appearing. Ghidorah being involved in Godzilla’s last two movies makes Mecha-King Ghidorah unlikely, and campy Showa series villains such as Gabara and Megalon don’t feel like great choices for Godzilla 3. But, Legendary does have some good options available to them.

Gigan

Theory Godzillas Next MonsterVerse Villain After Mechagodzilla

The cyborg alien insect monster is a long-time favorite of Godzilla fans, and one of the most popular choices for Godzilla 3’s antagonist. Thanks to the hook-like blades that act as hands, Gigan stands out as the first creature in cinematic history to make Godzilla bleed. Godzilla received a rather uncharacteristic beatdown courtesy of the kaiju in Godzilla vs. Gigan in 1972. During that one fight, Gigan established a reputation for himself as one of the most vicious Godzilla monsters ever. But as important as Gigan is, he’s never actually been the primary threat in a Godzilla movie. He was one half of a villain duo in both Godzilla vs. Gigan and Godzilla vs. Megalon, with his partners being Ghidorah and Megalon respectively. He was also a secondary antagonist in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.

All things considered, Gigan really hasn’t had a chance to stand in the spotlight yet, but Godzilla 3 could change that and offer a new, definitive version of the monster. As for how he’d work, it could be that just like Ghidorah, Gigan is an alien Titan who found his way to Earth. He may have been asleep somewhere in the Hollow Earth, but was woken up by the actions of organizations like Monarch and APEX in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Destoroyah

Theory Godzillas Next MonsterVerse Villain After Mechagodzilla

Toho famously wrapped up the Heisei era of Godzilla movies with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah in 1995, which ended in the King of the Monsters’ tragic death. Because of a nuclear meltdown his body was experiencing, Godzilla was headed for an explosive end from the beginning of the movie – but he didn’t go down alone. Before dying, he had to go through one last battle with Destoroyah, a monster who evolved from a crustacean after being mutated by the Oxygen Destroyer weapon that killed the 1954 Godzilla.

Even with his nuclear power boost, Godzilla had a lot of difficulties beating Destoroyah, but managed to overcome him in the end before giving up his life to save his son. Destoroyah serving as the perfect final villain for the Heisei era has led a large number fans to want him to have a similar role if and when the new franchise reaches a conclusion. Destoroyah could be utilized as the ultimate MonsterVerse villain. Regardless of if that happens, the creature has already been set up. Like his Toho counterpart, Destoroyah could have been born from the use of the Oxygen Destroyer in King of the Monsters.

SpaceGodzilla

Theory Godzillas Next MonsterVerse Villain After Mechagodzilla

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is far from one of the most revered films in the franchise, considering that it suffered from a number of story problems along with other issues. That being said, the movie’s titular villain did go over quite well with the fanbase, who welcomed what he brought to the table. In Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, the extraterrestrial kaiju was introduced as a malevolent monster created by an accident in space. Somehow, some of Godzilla’s DNA made it outside the Earth’s atmosphere, where it was transformed by the energy from a black hole. What it created was a monster so strong even Godzilla couldn’t beat it without help. The MonsterVerse could have fun with such a destructive and powerful force if it were to bring him to life on the big screen. His Godzilla-like body and large white crystals on his shoulders gave him a truly menacing design that wouldn’t need much updating for the MonsterVerse. All he would need is a new story.

Biollante

Thematically, the monster that Godzilla fought in Godzilla vs. Biollante would fit perfectly into the MonsterVerse. In the Heisei series movie, the gigantic, plant-like monster was depicted as the product of a failed experiment that combined the genetic material of Godzilla, a rose, and a scientist’s deceased daughter. It was a bit of a tragic concept that hinged on the idea that the spirit of the girl used to make Biollante may be alive within its monstrous form. In a sense, this made Biollante, despite her terrifying visage, into a sympathetic figure as well as a victim. Biollante represented what happens to nature when it gets twisted by the mistakes and neglect of humans.

Godzilla vs. Biollante wasn’t the first movie in the franchise to take an environmental stance, but its message was more obvious and blunter than most. Since humanity being the root of all problems is a common theme in the MonsterVerse, Biollante would make a lot of sense for Godzilla 3. Plus, the mention of “organic Titans” being genetically engineered by Monarch in the King of the Monsters credits makes Biollante’s origin possible for Godzilla 3. Following her creation, Godzilla could sense this perversion of nature (and his own DNA), and rise out of the ocean’s depths once again to save the planet.
