Some actors are deft at comedy, while some others excel at drama. And then there are those who can do both with equal dexterity. They can bring out uproarious laughter from live audiences with their physical comedy and then make a complete 180, perfectly conveying emotions like anger, pain, and even fear.

Whether they are providing humorous takes on fluffy sitcoms or delivering wordy monologues on courtroom dramas, there have been several actors that have appeared on Emmy-winning shows for Comedy and Drama. Some actors even went on to win Emmys for both their comedic and dramatic performances, confirming their range and cementing their reputations as some of the most respected in their craft.

11 Allison Janney – The West Wing & Mom

Allison Janney is the very definition of an Emmy darling. Winner of 7 Primetime Emmy Awards, Janney starred in Aaron Sorkin’s political drama, The West Wing for seven years. In this role, she won four Emmys, two in the ‘Supporting’ category and two in ‘Lead’. The show itself won four consecutive Emmys for ‘Outstanding Drama Series.’

Since 2013, Janney has played the role of Bonnie in Chuck Lorre’s Mom. For the role, she won the Emmy for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series’ and received four nominations more, two in ‘Supporting’ and two in ‘Lead.’ Besides Janney, however, the show has failed to win any of its other nominations through the years.

10 Sandra Oh – Killing Eve & Saturday Night Live

It’s truly a shame that Sandra Oh still hasn’t won a single Emmy, despite twelve nominations. She received five consecutive mentions for her work on Grey’s Anatomy but failed to win any. In 2019 alone, she received four nominations, for her work as a star and producer of Killing Eve, and her hosting of both SNL and the 76th Golden Globes. She went on to receive two further nominations in 2020, for her dual acting/producing roles on Eve.

While Oh herself hasn’t won any of her nominations, the shows themselves have. Grey’s won some awards, most notably for Katherine Heigl’s supporting performance in 2007. Killing Eve won for Jodie Comer’s lead turn as Villanelle, while SNL has won a plethora of Emmy throughout its 46-season run.

8 Whoopi Goldberg – Star Trek: The Next Generation & Glee

Screen icon Whoopi Goldberg appeared as the recurring character, Guinan, during five seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series won a total of fifteen Emmy Awards, mostly in below-the-line categories like ‘Makeup,’ ‘Costume Design,’ and ‘Sound Mixing and Editing.’

Between 2012 and 2014, Goldberg had a six-episode arc on the musical comedy Glee, where she played the role of demanding and larger-than-life, NYADA director Carmen Tibideaux. The show won four Emmys, including one for Ryan Murphy’s direction of the Pilot episode.

7 Edie Falco – The Sopranos & Nurse Jackie

Starring as the infallible Carmela Soprano for all six seasons of The Sopranos, Edie Falco received six consecutive Emmy nominations for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series,’ winning three. One of the most critically acclaimed shows of the new millennium, The Sopranos, won a total of 21 Emmys, including two for ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ in 2004 and 2007.

For her role as nurse Jackie Payton, Falco won the 2010 Primetime Emmy Award for ‘Lead Actress in a Comedy’ and earned another five nominations. Nurse Jackie also won Emmys for Meritt Wever’s ‘Supporting’ turn and two for ‘Sound Mixing.’

6 Christine Baranski – Cybill & The Good Wife

A fifteen-time Emmy nominee, Christine Baranski won only once for her ‘Supporting’ role as Maryann Thorpe in the sitcom, Cybill. The show won two more trophies, for ‘Art Direction’ and ‘Costumes,’ before being canceled after its third season.

Since then, Baranski has starred in other acclaimed and Emmy-winning shows, most notably The Good Wife, a drama that won several trophies, including for lead star Julianna Margulies and supporting actress Archie Panjabi. Baranski never won, despite six consecutive nominations.

5 Uzo Aduba – Orange Is The New Black

Like Ed Asner before her, Aduba also won Comedy and Drama Emmys for playing the same character. Unlike Asner, however, Aduba did it by starring in only one series. Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black began its Emmy run by competing in the Comedy category. It earned several nominations, including ‘Outstanding Comedy Series.’ However, the only award the show won that night was ‘Outstanding Guest Actress,’ with Aduba walking away with the trophy night.

For its second year, it switched to Drama, where it faired significantly worse, receiving only an ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ nod and one for Aduba’s ‘Supporting’ turn, which she won. Aduba would receive a third ‘Supporting Actress nomination.

4 Sterling K. Brown – This Is Us & The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Following his breakthrough role in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Sterling K. Brown began portraying Randall Pearson in This is Us. This was a role that earned him rave reviews and numerous accolades, including the Emmy for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.’ The show earned three more Emmys, including two for guest actor Ron Cephas Jones.

Brown also has a four-episode arc on season three of the Amazon comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. For his supporting role, he earned an Emmy nod at the 2020 ceremony, one of the show’s seventeen nominations. The show has won several Emmys over the course of its run, including ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ for its first season.

3 John Lithgow – 3rd Rock From The Sun & The Crown

Another Emmy darling, John Lithgow won Emmys for playing three iconic characters of modern television. He accrued one for playing alien High Commander Dick Solomon in the 1990s sitcom 3rd Rock From The Sun. He also received one for playing serial killer Arthur Mitchell in Showtime’s drama Dexter, and for playing Winston Churchill in Netflix’s hit historical drama The Crown.

All three series had successful runs at the Emmys, with 3rd Rock winning several trophies, including three for supporting actress Kristen Johnston. Dexter won Steve Shill an Emmy for ‘Directing,’ while The Crown won awards for Claire Foy’s lead performance and Steven Daldry’s directing.

2 Jennifer Aniston – Friends & The Morning Show

As one of the leads in arguably the most successful and enduring sitcom of the 1990s, Jennifer Aniston’s place in the annals of television history is more than guaranteed. For her role as Rachel Green, she won the 2002 Primetime Emmy Award for ‘Lead Actress in a Comedy,’ the same year that Friends won ‘Outstanding Comedy Series.’

In 2019, Aniston began playing the role of Alex Levy in Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, for which she received a nomination for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.’ The show itself received seven more nominations but only won for Billy Crudup’s supporting turn.

1 Bryan Cranston – Malcolm In The Middle & Breaking Bad

For his role as the lovable and inept Hal in Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle, Bryan Cranston received three nominations for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series’ but failed to win any. The show won two writing Emmys and Cloris Leachman won for ‘Guest Actress in a Comedy.’

Cranston would go on to give his most critically acclaimed turn in the AMC drama Breaking Bad. For his role as Walter White, Cranston won four Emmys for ‘Lead Actor,’ three of them consecutively. He also won two for ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ as one of the show’s producers, and the show won numerous other Emmys, including for supporting actors Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn.
