The hit NBC series This Is Us has a knack for exploring complex characters in profoundly human and emotional situations, as it tells the multi-generational story of the central Pearson clan. But as a consequence of exploring complex and human characters, the show also doesn’t shy away from some of the uglier sides of humanity.

While This Is Us also highlights some of the high points of human nature, such as in its depiction of the incredible man that is Randall Pearson, it doesn’t hesitate to reveal some of human nature’s many failings, as it does with the unbearable Kevin Pearson.

10 Kevin: Selfish

Kevin is a character who has spent much of his life detached from the needs of his family, after suddenly moving away from them and making a name for himself in the superficial acting world. As a result of that, he struggles to make connections with people for any reason other than necessity.

Simply put, Kevin uses people as a means to an end, especially the many women whose lives he routinely enters and exits at the drop of a hat. Perhaps it’s to be expected, as he fully buys into the stereotypes of the Hollywood playboy. But it’s still obnoxious, and unforgivable.

9 Randall: Selfless

Randall Pearson never thinks about himself. It’s one of his greatest weaknesses, as it feeds into his unbearable anxiety and crippling self-doubt. But it’s also one of his greatest strengths, as it positions him as the series’ most truly selfless, heroic character.

Whether it means taking in the biological father he never knew, or committing to fix up an inner city apartment building after that father’s passing, Randall is always willing to put everyone else’s needs above his own.

8 Kevin: Unreliable

As a consequence of being deeply selfish, Kevin is also profoundly unreliable. This, of course, also goes hand in hand with the addiction storyline that dominates so much of his character’s journey. But whether under the influence or not, Kevin is a hard man to pin down at any time when his family and friends really need him.

And even when he does show up when you need him, such as during Randall’s first season breakdown, he’s unreliable in other ways, bailing on the theatre company who wait for him mid-production.

7 Randall: Always there

As we’ve already established, Randall is a man who is always there – for his friends, for his family, and even for the strangers in the district for which he serves as city councilman.

Randall opens his home to all who enter it, whether his biological father, William; his adopted daughter, Deja; or any of the many other family members who come and go over the course of the series. He’s there for Rebecca through her health issues, and for Beth through her pursuit of her dreams. Randall is there, period. And that never changes.

6 Kevin: Toxic relationships

When we say that Kevin uses people to serve his own needs, that’s really just barely glimpsing the surface. He’s never more selfish than he is in his romantic relationships.

In the case of Sophie, his first love, Kevin strung her along for years on end, both in their youth and in their adulthood, cheating on her during their marriage and humiliating her through his addiction struggles in their older years. But some of his other, more casual relationships, are incredibly toxic too, whether with the abusive addict Cassidy, the self-loathing and flaky Madison, or the self-absorbed actress Olivia.

5 Randall: Incredible husband

From day one, Randall has been presented as the series’ most reliable and loyal husband, even more than the seemingly unattainable model established by Pearson patriarch Jack Pearson.

Though Randall and Beth have had their fair share of issues, they always work through everything. They support one another, believe in each other, talk to each other, and share their needs and their load. Everything’s better with a little R&B.

4 Kevin: Permanent man child

Sometimes, it can be nice to have a character who’s goofier, lighter, and doesn’t subject themselves to the adult rules the rest of the world does. But most of the time, Kevin’s cloying, cheesy, childlike behavior comes off as entirely immature and disingenuous.

The man once known as The Manny has spent much of the series struggling to grow up out of the seemingly permanent Peter Pan complex he has lived with so far. And honestly, four seasons in and with children on the way, it’s about time Kevin grow up and take responsibility for something in his life.

3 Randall: Leader of the family

After Jack Pearson’s tragic and untimely death, a void was left in the Pearson family that could never be truly filled again. But more than any other member of the family to date, Randall has stepped up in every way imaginable, proving himself to be the new patriarch and leader that the family needs.

He was there to support Rebecca and keep the family going strong as best as he could during those early days after Jack’s loss, and decades later, he’s still the one trying more than anyone else to keep the family functioning as best as it can – which isn’t always easy.

2 Kevin: Emotionally abusive

You’d be hard pressed to find many pivotal moments in Kevin’s storyline on the series that don’t involve him hurting someone in some way. Whether repeatedly and often publicly hurting those he loves most, such as Sophie and Zoe, or risking the life of his young niece by driving drunk with her in the backseat, Kevin makes one bad move after another.

But perhaps the worst, most damaging of them all came in the fourth season finale, when he told Randall that the worst thing that ever happened to him was the day his brother was adopted. Talk about abusive.

1 Randall: A good man

At every phase of his life, in every timeline, and portrayed by every talented actor who has brought this multi-faceted character to life, Randall Pearson is a truly good person. It’s not something that can be said of many fictional characters, whether on this series or any popular high stakes drama on television right now.

He’s a compassionate brother, a protective and loving son and father, a faithful and passionate husband, a strong leader, an inspiring councilman, and so much more. He’s flawed, but he’s genuine. He’s real, and he’s good, and he just might be the very best the Pearsons have to offer.
