WARNING: The following contains spoilers for This Is Us Season 5, Episode 16, “Adirondacks,” which aired Tuesday on NBC.

The Season 5 finale of This Is Us is finally here. Episode 16, “Adirondacks,” opens with Kevin practicing what are presumably his wedding vows in front of the mirror, including a Princess Bride reference he debates cutting from his speech. Then the episode cuts to a flashback of Rebecca watching a television show she had recorded but was copied over by a baseball game.

Jack is tucking the boys into bed to give Rebecca the night off from responsibility, when Rebecca confronts him about copying over her show. She has been struggling lately with parenting and vents about how her show is her only escape from parenting. The kids are not oblivious to their fighting and the next morning they wake up their parents to ask if they still love each other.

The episode cuts to Madison as a little girl learning that her mother is leaving her and her dad. As she leaves, Madison’s mom gives her a set of earrings to wear on her wedding day. Then the episode snaps to the present on Kevin and Madison’s wedding day where Kevin is obsessing over the details and Madison gives him a chance to call things off, which he doesn’t accept. Uncle Nicky is filming everything on his iPad and reveals he has organized the delivery of his wedding present to the venue and that it’s going to be a very large gift.

Kate and Toby are getting ready for the wedding as the kids nap and Toby announces that he got a new job with a startup in San Francisco where he’d be required on site three days a week. Toby presses that he needs to go back to work as he’s struggling with being a stay-at-home dad. Kate asks for the opportunity to digest what he’s presented to her.

Miguel and Rebecca are taking as much time as they can with their grandchildren who are in town for the wedding and whom they have hardly seen in the past year. Beth is still trying to bond with Tess as she gathers the girls to get ready for the wedding at a hotel. Rebecca asks Randall to tell her more about his trip to New Orleans as she’s looking for more insight to his experience. He says he will tell her about it, though he’s clearly reluctant.

After Deja, Tess and Annie collect their bridesmaid dresses, Kevin learns that the alter collapsed, so he promises to fix it to make sure everything is perfect to Madison’s vision. Rebecca corners Randall for a coffee and conversation where Randall shares photos with Rebecca of Hai and Laurel. Rebecca is emotional about the conversation and Randall tries to change the topic as Kevin pulls him away and sends him to Home Depot. This leaves Rebecca alone, holding back tears.

Returning to the flashback, Jack and Rebecca talk to the kids about witnessing their fight the previous evening and show them their wedding video. Jack reveals that he doesn’t remember his vows and this also upsets Rebecca, so they continue to bicker in front of the kids and do nothing to dispel their concerns. Kate says they need to get re-married and Randall insists on doing so that day.

Madison is getting ready for her wedding and has a flashback to being a teenager. Her dad tries to give her money for a prom dress, but she doesn’t accept it when she reveals that her date decided to take someone else instead of her. Her father’s advice is to not be choosy and to just go to the dance with anyone who will take her. In the present, Madison is worried about her vows and Kate says that the words aren’t as important as the moment and the commitment as she remembers her wedding day. Kate’s memory prompts an epiphany and she leaves to make a call after she tells Madison she loves her.

Annie asks Deja if she’s going to marry Malik and Deja admits that she’s thinking about it. Beth compliments Tess, who is barely responsive, then pushes to find out what’s wrong. Tess admits that everyone is expecting a certain version of her that isn’t who she is and therefore she’s worried about disappointing everyone. Beth reassures her that Tess could never disappoint her and offers to help make her bridesmaid dress more Tess’ style. This prompts Tess to smile for the first time in the episode.

Jack and Rebecca put on a new wedding in their living room run by their three children, with Kate as the officiant as the boys walk Rebecca down the isle. Jack includes the kids in their ceremony and they all promise to marry and love each other. Meanwhile in the present, Kate calls her job to resign because she can’t work with Toby going back to work. Her boss, Philip, reminds her that he didn’t want to hire her in the first place. Before she can say anything, he says she’s talented and useful and the kids love her and therefore he doesn’t accept her resignation.

Miguel works to rebuild the alter with Nicky as Randall tries to help Kevin relax. Then Beth runs in to say she’s changing Tess’ dress, adding to Kevin’s sense of being overwhelmed. Toby asks Kevin about how to manage a long-distance relationship and Kevin admits that he never did those very well. Nicky’s wedding present, deck chairs, are delivered to the venue and its the final straw as Kevin needs to take some space and flees inside alone.

Kate and Toby meet up and Toby says that he doesn’t want to leave his family three days a week so he won’t take the job. Kate insists that he take it but also says she won’t quit her job. Kate says that she doesn’t remember Toby’s vows because in the moment she was just so excited to marry him and that she’ll take any time she can get with him, even if it’s just four days a week. She believes that they can make their marriage work long distance. These two have never been stronger or more in love it seems.

Beth finishes updating Tess’ dress much to her daughter’s delight. Tess admits she hasn’t been nice to Beth lately, and Beth cuts her a break. They hug, finally getting along and putting away the tension they’ve had with each other most of the season. Deja gets a video call from Malik who got accepted to all of the schools he applied to, including Harvard — the only school not close to Philadelphia.

Rebecca confronts Randall by the alter where she admits that she never did explain why she kept Randall’s parents from him. She says he has let her off the hook far too often, but not anymore. She reminds him of their living room family wedding, and she admitted she thought Randall was thinking of his birth parents in that moment. Then Rebecca admits that she always rationalized her decisions and never gave him the opportunity to talk about his experience with her, which she is ashamed of.

Rebecca wants to make it very clear to Randall that she is sorry for how she has hurt him. She explains that when she cries hearing his story, it’s an acknowledgment of what she robbed from him, and not because she is jealous or upset. She asks to hear about his mother, and Randall clarifies that Laurel was his birth mother, then he explains how wonderful Laurel was and how learning about her unlocked something about himself.

Madison is getting ready to put on the earrings when she has a flashback to a breakup with a man who didn’t love her as much as she loved him and how that connects to her eating disorder. This leads into the memory of Madison’s meeting at Kate’s weight-loss support group back in Season 1. Following the flashback, Madison goes to talk Kevin. Madison asks him if he’s in love with her. Kevin says they are going to become a family and Madison admits that she has fallen in love with Kevin, but she wants to know if he loves her, not just the concept of her as part of a family.

Madison shows Kevin the earrings her mother left with her and how she was left with a man who told her not to expect magic in her life. She says she went through life grateful for scraps, and that’s why it would be easy for her to marry him knowing he didn’t love her. Kevin tries to explain that what they have together can and will grow. Kevin never says he loves her. Madison explains that she can’t marry someone who is not in love with her, and despite his best effort, the two don’t get married.

Rebecca goes to talk to Kevin and they are joined by Randall and Kate. Rebecca ponders what Jack would do in this situation and that it’s harder for her to imagine how Jack would fit into their growing family dynamic. Randall says that Jack wouldn’t leave Kevin alone, and Kate says Jack would worry about Kevin drinking and help keep him busy. Kevin promises not to drink and Rebecca gives him a project and asks Kevin to build the house Jack was going to build all those years ago, which Kevin agrees to. Rebecca promises he will be fine and the episode approaches the ending with a montage of the living room wedding next to Kevin, Randall and Kate holding Rebecca’s hand.

The episode wraps up with a flash forward that is just chock full of surprising details. We return to the start when Kevin is practicing a speech written on “Big Three Construction” note paper. It turns out, he wasn’t practicing his vows at all, but a speech for someone else’s wedding. Also revealed is that uncle Nicky is married now. Kevin knocks on the door of the bridal suite to reveal Madison and Beth, though neither of them are the bride. Madison and Kevin seem to be on great terms despite the failed wedding when suddenly Kate steps out in a wedding dress as she prepares to get married. Then when the girls kick Kevin out, he runs into Philip and it is revealed that he is going to be Kevin’s new brother-in-law.

Created by Dan Fogelman, This Is Us stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Chris Sullivan and Susan Kelechi Watson. New episodes air Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT on NBC.
