Avatar The Legend Of Korra All 9 Known Avatars Explained

Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender introduced fans to a world filled with powerful benders, avatars, rich lore, and world-building that would bring a tear to the eye of any fan. Avatar: The Legend Of Korra expanded on what fans loved and gave glimpses of the beginning of the avatar cycle as well as the future that Aang helped establish.

While these two series have gone a long way to introducing fans to a few avatars, the stories of the avatars have expanded even further through comics and novels. So just what else has been revealed about past incarnations of the Avatar?

9 Wan

Though Avatar Wan wasn’t introduced to fans until nearly halfway through Avatar Korra’s journey, his introduction gave avatar fans, and Korra herself, some much-needed backstory on the origins of the avatar. As the first Avatar, Wan was tasked with taking down the spirit of darkness and chaos, Vaatu. In order to do that, however, Wan needed to fuse with the spirit of light, Rava, who would help him control all of the elements that had been granted to him by the four lion turtles (on for every nation).

After defeating and imprisoning Vaatu, Wan guided the spirits back to the spirit world and sought to bring peace to the physical world. While he would die before ever seeing peace between the different nations, Wan would establish that Avatar as the being who promotes peace and seeks to establish a balance between the spirit and physical worlds.

8 Salai

While Avatar Salai is technically one of the avatars that fans have been introduced to, a brief introduction is all fans have really gotten so far. Salai is mentioned twice during the course of the novels following Avatar Kyoshi. Once, when they are mentioned alongside Avatar Yangchen (widely-regarded as the most powerful avatar), and again with a simple mention of the name Salai.

Other than that, fans know nothing about this avatar. Not the avatar’s gender, nor their nation, or even any of their accomplishments. The only thing that fans really know about this avatar, aside from their name, is that they’re a complete mystery. Although, it is widely theorized that this avatar is the male avatar from the Earth Kingdom that preceded Avatar Szeto.

7 Szeto

While fans of the Avatar series have come to know the Avatar as the one person that can bend all of the elements and is tasked with bringing peace to the four nations, Avatar Szeto viewed his position a bit differently. Rather than focusing on repairing the world as a whole, Avatar Szeto gave up his privileges as Avatar in order to heal a broken Fire Nation.

Taking a low-level position in the Fire Nation government, Szeto eventually worked his way up to becoming Grand Advisor to the Fire Lord. Szeto would spend essentially all of his time as Avatar focused on healing the Fire Nation while neglecting the other nations altogether.

6 Yangchen

Avatar Yangchen, or ‘The Great Yangchen’ as she would come to be known, is widely regarded as the most powerful Avatar to have ever lived. In fact, so talented as an airbender was she that it was said she was capable of changing the weather with her bending.

Not only was Avatar Yangchen incredibly powerful, but she was so beloved that after she died people would often pray to her for protection and luck. In fact, people would even pray to Yangchen when facing off against other incarnations of the Avatar.

5 Kuruk

While Yangchen was fondly remembered after her passing, her focus on the physical world and siding with humans during disputes with spirits would send the spirit world into disarray. The devastation caused to the spirit world would be left to Avatar Kuruk. Though Avatar Kuruk was the most powerful bender of his time, often challenging the strongest firebenders to agni kais, the strongest earthbenders to boulder-lifting contests, the turmoil of the spirit world would prove to be too much for him.

Not only would Kuruk lose bits of his soul every time he destroyed dark spirits, but this would eventually lead him to fall into a depression, drink excessively and sleep through important meetings. As if that wasn’t bad enough, on the day of his wedding, his bride-to-be would be taken by Koh The Face Stealer.

4 Kyoshi

Fans of the Avatar series were able to get to know Avatar Kyoshi a little bit during the course of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but throughout the comics and the novels that follower her story, fans have come to know Avatar Kyoshi even more. Born to a runaway air nomad nun named Jessa and an Earth Kingdom thief from a poor acting family named Hark, Kyoshi would eventually be abandoned by her parents and left to fend for herself.

Unlike other Avatars, no one actually knew that Kyoshi was the avatar until she had already turned sixteen. Despite being abandoned, Kyoshi would go on to use her mother’s fans and headdress as well as her father’s face paint to create her iconic look. While Avatar Kuruk, the Avatar that preceded her, only lived for thirty-three years, Avatar Kyoshi would go on to live for a whopping two-hundred and thirty years before passing.

3 Roku

Of all the avatars, aside from Aang, that fans were introduced to throughout the course of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Roku is the one that fans have come to know the most. While Roku managed to master all of the elements and the avatar state by the time he was twenty-eight that wouldn’t be enough for him to stop Fire Lord Sozin from starting the hundred-year war.

Though he vastly outpowered Sozin, it was a combination of his compassion and toxic volcanic fumes that would be Roku’s downfall. Aside from Avatar Szeto and Kyoshi, Avatar Roku is the only Avatar shown capable of lavabending.

2 Aang

Avatar The Legend Of Korra All 9 Known Avatars Explained

Due to the encroaching threat of war with the Fire Nation, Aang was the only known Avatar, up to that point, made aware of his identity before he became sixteen. Aside from learning and mastering all the elements, energy bending and the avatar state, Aang was also the youngest Air Nomad to master the element and earn his tattoos up until that point in Air Nomad history.

Though he was constantly pushed into fighting and killing the Fire Lord, Aang’s persistence and unwillingness to take a life would eventually become the key to his mastery of energy bending. Before the time that most Avatars learn that they are, in fact, Avatars, Aang had already mastered all elements, energy bending, saved the world and mastered the avatar state.

1 Korra

Besides Aang, Korra is the avatar that fans know most about, but here as some things that fans may not be aware of yet. Avatar Korra is the youngest Avatar to have become aware of her identity. By the time she was only four years old, Avatar Korra could already use water, fire, and earthbending.

Aside from her natural ability with most elements, Avatar Korra is the only Avatar to be shown using metalbending. Throughout her tenure as Avatar, Korra would go on to restore the Air Nomads, bringing back airbenders by opening spirits portals around the world and unifying the spirit and physical worlds.
