This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3 Four Fathers Recap & Spoilers

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for This Is Us Season 6, Episode 3, “Four Fathers,” which aired Tuesday January 18th on NBC.

This Is Us Season 6, Episode 3, “Four Fathers” starts with a flashforward to Kate’s son, Jack, barbequing at a luxury home. He talks about a very vivid memory he has of a specific day that we only get quick glimpses of, a memory he refers to as his first memory. This launches into an episode all about the fathers in the Pearson clan. We start by cutting back to Jack returning home late after work. He’s missed putting his kids to bed and he’s concerned his kids aren’t going to remember him because he works long days. Rebecca suggests dedicating the weekend to the kids, and Jack’s idea is to take them to the movie theatre to see their first movie.

Then in the present, Toby leaves for his long distance job, leaving Kate and their two children behind. He arrives at the hotel and struggles with the distance, especially around bedtime. Plus, there’s the fact that the hours apart are getting to him and Kate as well. Across town, Kevin doesn’t live with Madison anymore, so he shows up in the mornings to spend time with his twins. He and Madison are hoping sharing parenting responsibilities will eventually get easier. And over in Philadelphia, Randall is teaching Deja how to drive and he’s very excited about the opportunity to connect with his oldest daughter.

Jack brings his three kids to the movie theatre and stocks them up with snacks for a total cost of eight dollars. While the movie plays, Kevin gets bored and leaves the theatre. Jack falls asleep watching the movie, so he doesn’t notice right away. He is startled awake a little later to discover Kevin left, so he hauls Kate and Randall through the mall looking for him. In the end they find him with Rebecca. Mall security found Kevin and got her contact information from the inside of Kevin’s shoe.

They head home as a family and when they get there, Jack is upset about losing Kevin, and he feels bad for letting his kids down and the fact that Kevin’s first movie will always be tainted by the fact that he got lost. Rebecca makes Jack feel better by explaining how difficult her day at the park with the kids was, and how in the end they only remembered the good parts. This gives Jack hope that the kids will find something better to remember from this bad day. So that night Jack brings home a bundle of VHS tapes and sets up an at-home movie night for the kids, including a sundae bar. What follows is a delightful, charming night for the whole family. After the kids go to bed, Jack gets a phone call and learns that his mom has passed away.

In the present, Randall teaches Deja how to drive, but she insists on setting up her own playlist to do so. The lesson is going well, and Randall takes it as an opportunity to connect with her. As she’s driving, she gets a text — that the car reads out loud for her — from Malik that lets Randall know that Deja went to visit him in Boston, a fact she had neglected to tell him herself. Back at home after the driving lesson, Randall vents to Beth about Deja’s lies.

Randall is very upset about the situation, and Beth says that she is going to talk to Deja while Randall goes for a run to calm down. While he’s running, Beth gently comforts a clearly upset Deja. By the time Randall gets back, Beth is waiting in the kitchen and she stands up for Deja, despite the fact she confiscated her phone. Beth explains to Randall that they have to adjust and accept that Deja is not a little girl, but a young woman, which is why she’s taking her to get birth control.

He goes to talk to Deja, and explains to her that he still sees her as the little girl he first met, and he’s having a hard time adjusting to the fact that she’s growing up, especially since he missed the first part of her life already. He asks her to be patient with him as he adjusts to this new version of her. Though he does try to put his foot down on more trips to Boston, Deja doesn’t accept that order.

Kevin is living with Kate while trying to figure out the whole co-parenting thing. He vents his frustrations to his sister, and she thanks him for stepping up to help with her own kids. Then Toby arrives home ahead of the date night he and Kate are going to have that evening, which is a concert at her school. Leaving Kate and Toby behind, Kevin heads out to work on his show The Manny, the Reboot. Kevin clearly misses being more involved in his children’s lives as he watches Kate and Toby with their kids on his way out the door.

Toby has some gifts for his children, he got Jack a beeping football, but Kate asks him to put the toy away until after nap time. She also mentions that Toby always brings presents home when he comes. Toby gives Kate an afternoon off to pamper herself so he can spend time with the kids. Kate stresses the importance of keeping the kids on their routine, but later that night it’s revealed that Toby didn’t keep to the schedule. That means Jack is awake and fussy when the babysitter arrives, so Toby sends Kate off ahead to the performance so she doesn’t miss it, but he stays behind to get Jack settled down and off to sleep.

After the performance, Phillip stops Kate and congratulates her on the success of her students and he asks about Toby’s absence. Kate explains that she and Toby had a stupid argument and she’s frustrated about their situation. Phillip opens up about the bitter arguments he used to have with his ex-wife. He ends up telling Kate exactly what she needs to hear, in his own unique way.

Toby is cleaning up after the kids when Kate comes home, she brought back dessert for them to share while they talk about how difficult it has been for them as a family lately. Toby has a hard time with the fact that Kate knows their kids better than he does. He then presents a luxury smoker he wants to buy for their house so they can use it to make some family memories. This leads back to the beginning of the episode, with Jack and his wife using the smoker. It’s then revealed that it is the very cooker which was at the center of Kate and Toby’s divorce and a head injury Jack sustained during his traumatic first memory.
