League of Legends How Gwen Is Related to Isolde

The popular multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends features a huge cast of playable characters known as champions. Each champion has a unique backstory, and the game constantly introduces new characters to keep it fresh and relevant. Some of these champions help to further develop the lore of the League of Legends universe and the events that take place within it, such as the Noxian invasion of Ionia, the three-way war in Freljord, and (most recently) the Ruination event led by the champion Viego.

These skillfully-told stories and exciting new champions have kept players coming back over the years, with many speculating who will come next. Developer Riot Games likes to mislead fans with teasers, hints, and puns that help the community craft interesting theories about new champion releases. One of those champions is the recently-announced Gwen, The Hallowed Seamstress.

In League of Legends’ story, Viego and his wife Isolde started as side characters who were hinted at for years before finally coming into the spotlight as complete characters during the Ruination event. Viego was a young king who fell madly in love with a seamstress, Isolde, and took her as his queen. Tragically, Isolde died, and her soul was scattered into pieces. Haunted by his loss and corrupted by magic, Viego searched for the pieces to bring Isolde back — and it seems that one of those pieces resides in Gwen.

Unlike with the soul in Senna, this piece of Isolde’s soul does not possess or hide within a living body; instead, it’s within a doll. Riot Games has teased Gwen as a champion with a couple of puns and teaser art related to sewing, but all of this led fans to speculate that a revived Isolde herself would be the new champion. The developers pleasantly surprised players with the introduction of Gwen, a doll which appears to have been created by Isolde and brought to life by a piece of her soul following the cataclysmic events of the Shadow Isles.

It’s evident from Gwen’s champion teaser “Made with Love” that Gwen was Isolde’s most beloved possession, created by her as little girl. Kept in a sewing box full of thread, scissors and needles, it appears Isolde loved her doll. It seems from the sound of seabirds and the ocean that Gwen was brought along during Viego’s journey to revive Isolde at the Blessed Isles, further pushing the idea that Gwen treasured by Isolde. The trailer also uses a needle and thread for transitions, emphasizing that Gwen is the teased seamstress champion.

Gwen’s appearance also confirms the idea that Isolde’s body and soul were broken into pieces that scattered themselves across Runeterra. The Ruination of the Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles sank Viego’s ship, taking Gwen down with it, but a fragment of Isolde seems to have found Gwen. It has hidden itself within her, transforming her to be more like a living person or even a golem.

In Gwen’s champion gameplay trailer, it is revealed that Gwen made it to shore on the Shadow Isles. She also found the scissors she was created with, and chooses them to be her main weapon. The blue haired woman or golem has a free will now, and some of her in-game lines reference her creator and how thankful she is to be alive. Her playstyle also appears to be something of a mid-ranged assassin or mage.

Like most assassins, Gwen seems to supports a high-mobility playstyle as evidenced by her dash ability and a unique area of effect that prevents her (and maybe others) from being crowd controlled. It acts a lot like Morgana’s E ability, except Gwen places hers on the ground and (as long as she is within the zone) she can not be afflicted with status effects. Gwen move this zone a short distance towards her to extend the range of her CC immunity.

Gwen also appears to have a projectile ability where she shoots out a needle that applies a slow from a short distance, then three more needles float around her. It seems that, with each attack, the number of needles increases, and Gwen can shoot them in a chosen direction to deal damage. Some needles are also seen on the ground, hinting that she could pick them up and throw them again.

Finally, Gwen uses her huge pair of scissors as her main weapon for auto attacks, as well as a double cast ability that seems to work similar to Fiora’s E. On activation, Gwen stands still and slices an area with her blades four times — once in the beginning, then three times at the end. As for the lane that Gwen caters to, it’s been stated that she will be an AP top lane champion who can counter assassins and mages. However, it is unknown if Gwen will stay that way.
