Legion of SuperHeroes The 31st Centurys Biggest Mystery Is Gotham

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Legion of Super-Heroes #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, Ryan Sook, Wade Von Grawbadger, Jordie Bellaire and Dave Sharpe, in stores now.

In Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium #2, we learned that a terrible cataclysm had destroyed the Earth as we know it. In the 31st century, New Earth is now comprised of domed cities that are artificially held together by an energy core. While we don’t know yet what happened to the planet, we learn more about its destruction and salvation in Brian Micheal Bendis and Ryan Sook’s Legion of Super-Heroes #1, where it’s revealed that New Earth was created by engineers from all over the galaxy.

On top of that, the issue reveals that the Legion’s headquarters now encapsulates all of the city of Metropolis, which is now one of the domed territories of New Earth. But as we discover more about the disappearance of the oceans and the tragedies that befell the Earth of the past, perhaps the biggest mystery is one hiding slightly under the surface: Gotham City.

The fate of the city once protected by the Dark Knight and the Bat-family is shrouded in secrecy, and it’s not clear what happened to it or what it became.

Legion of SuperHeroes The 31st Centurys Biggest Mystery Is Gotham

As Legion of Super-Heroes #1 opens, we find ourselves in what is called Planet Gotham, in the Blüdhaven sewer system. Instantly, we come to understand that while the Gotham we once knew is no more, it evolved into become something else and survived into the 31st century. As the young Legionnaires who give chase to alien mobsters on this planet explain, Gotham is no place for teenagers. In fact, when later reunited with the rest of their teammates, Star Boy is asked by an outraged Saturn Girl what they were doing in Gotham to begin with.

The implication seems to be that access to Planet Gotham is restricted, and that it’s not a place one just wanders into. However, it’s not clear if Gotham truly is its own planet now or just one of the many domed cities that comprises New Earth. It’s possible that this new version of the human homeworld is entirely made of some of its biggest and most famous cities. However, the Legion headquarters city is called Metropolis — not Planet Metropolis. Does Gotham get its own name, or is it really an entire planet somewhere in the galaxy?

This issuemay not reveal the answer, but Brainiac 5 does confirm that the fate of Gotham City was classified by the United Planets. However, it looks like the Legion’s records may hold the answer, since several members of the team seem to speak about the topic with some authority.

Clearly, the final fate of Gotham is meant to be a mystery of its own. The future is already a mysterious place that has us asking how the Earth was destroyed, and how Aquaman’s trident could possibly return the planet to its former glory. But Gotham may also be a big part of the puzzle. Perhaps we’ll learn more about the city when Damian Wayne later joins the team for an adventure in the coming months. Something tells us the young Robin will be quite interested in getting some answers about what happened to the city he calls home.
