Jungle Cruise (2021) remains, without question, one of Disney’s best live-action adventure films since the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. Encompassing stunning special effects and exciting stunts while having a solid storyline coupled with perfectly-timed comedic moments, Jungle Cruise has a feel-good quality and is thoroughly entertaining for all viewers. It’s what one would normally expect from the media giant.

Additionally, Jungle Cruise’s cast includes some major star power, featuring household names known for their amazing talents. The cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Jack Whitehall. These stars, of course, contributed to the high praise that Jungle Cruise received. Despite the performances being great overall, not every actor brought their A-game.

10 Fell Short: Jesse Plemons (Prince Joachim) Was Something Of A Nuisance

When evil and funny are done right, it can be a great combination. Unfortunately, Jesse Plemons falls short here, and his portrayal is more annoying than anything else. While he did have a genuinely funny moment with McGregor (Jack Whitehall) during Jungle Cruise, it wasn’t enough to save Prince Joachim from being utterly forgettable. It’s kind of sad that he had to be carried by another character in order to gain some traction.

9 Nailed It: There’s Nothing Emily Blunt (Dr. Lily Houghton) Can’t Do

Emily Blunt has consistently shown her versatility as an actor. Going from more serious films like A Quiet Place to taking on more light-hearted roles including the title character in Mary Poppins, it’s positively no surprise that she pulled this off.

Blunt’s portrayal of Dr. Lily Houghton is just more proof that her charisma and natural comedic acting abilities never disappoint viewers. She effortlessly steals the spotlight in nearly every scene, all while maintaining “strong form,” according to Frank (Dwayne Johnson).

8 Fell Short: Édgar Ramírez (Aguirre) Didn’t Seem Angry Enough

Aguirre’s backstory is revealed to be tragic after Jungle Cruise shows that his daughter is ill. Aguirre seeks revenge on Frank, who betrayed him while Aguirre was on a mission to preserve his daughter’s life nearly four hundred years ago.

One doesn’t sense pure rage from Édgar Ramírez, which he should be projecting for most of Jungle Cruise. For someone in his situation, he merely appears as though he’s going through the motions. Ramírez is a talented performer, but it’s a possibility that he just wasn’t right for this role.

7 Nailed It: Dwayne Johnson (Frank) Is The Funniest Skipper Fans Will Ever Meet

Dwayne Johnson is a legendary film star. With Jungle Cruise, Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson continues to demonstrate that he’s not just confined to action-heavy roles.

Interestingly, Frank’s character is a little different from the roles that Johnson is known for, as he’s often taken on serious, action-heavy roles like Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious franchise or Ray Gaines in San Andreas. Frank’s constant joke-cracking throughout Jungle Cruise shows a different facet of Johnson’s acting capabilities, which was nice to see.

6 Fell Short: Dani Rovira (Sancho) Faded Into The Background

Dani Rovira’s performance as Sancho was somewhat convincing. Generally speaking though, it felt as though every member of Aguirre’s posse relied more on the CGI that was heavily involved with their characters rather than their acting skills, which may not have been a choice they had.

It’s for this reason that Rovira missed the mark. Unsurprisingly, some viewers had little memory of him by the time Jungle Cruise concluded, and it’s only if they pay close attention to the credits that they’d be reminded of Sancho.

5 Nailed It: Jack Whitehall (McGregor Houghton) Doesn’t Pull Any Punches

To say the least, Jack Whitehall skillfully brings McGregor to life. These comedies need that one character who is (initially) a fish-out-of-water. McGregor is someone who makes snarky remarks and can’t live without fancy things, which all play into the humor of Jungle Cruise. Whitehall embodies McGregor with ease.

Plus, the scene where he subtly discusses his sexuality with Frank packs an emotional punch. It makes for a refreshingly vulnerable moment between two male characters. Audiences remember the significant conversation long after they’ve watched Jungle Cruise, and it’s all thanks to Whitehall’s brilliant delivery.

4 Fell Short: Andy Nyman (Sir James Hobbs-Coddington) Overdoes The “I’m Better Than You” Act

Overacting was the sole reason why Andy Nyman missed the mark when portraying Sir James Hobbs-Coddington. At the beginning, particularly, his theatrical speaking when patronizing McGregor could have been dialed back just a little.

Although including intelligent yet arrogant characters in films can be essential, Jungle Cruise could also have benefited from adding some sarcastic quips to make his brief appearance more interesting. Nonetheless, Andy Nyman tried too hard, and it ended up backfiring.

3 Nailed It: Everyone Felt Paul Giamatti’s (Nilo Nemolato) Excitement

Nobody doubts that Paul Giamatti is a Hollywood legend. Although he doesn’t have a main role in Jungle Cruise, his experience as an actor stands out. He’s played many characters who deal with intense situations and he brings so much conviction to the table.

He does it yet again as Nilo in Jungle Cruise, especially when encountering Proxima, Frank’s pet jaguar. His knack for intensity, whether conveying fear, anger, or glee, captivates viewers every time he hits the big screen. Jungle Cruise is no exception and Giamatti left moviegoers very satisfied indeed.

2 Fell Short: Quim Gutierrez (Melchor) Needed More Enthusiasm

Melchor was vicious with his actions, but his face says otherwise. Even if Melchor was meant to be a passive character throughout Jungle Cruise, this shouldn’t also imply that he should have a deadpan facial expression. When characters attack people, audiences don’t expect an expressionless face.

Quim Gutierrez adding some pep into his performance might have made the character seem more intentional. Unfortunately, Quim Gutierrez fell short in his role.

1 Nailed It: Veronica Falcón (Trader Sam) Is A Likable Supporting Character

Trader Sam’s character is hilarious. The success of this character is mainly due to Veronica Falcón’s ability to play off of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s energy really well. The spirit that Falcón possesses as Trader Sam is exactly what the main characters need, which clearly indicates that she fulfilled her purpose.

She nails the priceless moments that Jungle Cruise offers Trader Sam, like confronting Frank about deceiving Lily and McGregor in the midst of putting on a performance that Frank asked for.
