Thor 4 Why Chris Hemsworths New Look Is The Opposite Of Endgames Fat Thor

Thor: Love and Thunder will feature Chris Hemsworth as his fittest and strongest playing the God of Thunder — exactly the opposite of Fat Thor from Avengers: Endgame. After significant delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, production for the Taika Waititi-directed blockbuster has going on smoothly in the last few months. While people involved in the project can’t reveal anything plot-related, Hemsworth recently said that he’s in his best physical state for the movie in all his years portraying the Avenger in the MCU. This backs up a previous quote from his body double saying that the actor has been the biggest he’s been ever since they started working together.

Hemsworth, as most superhero stars, have been training to be in their best shape in preparation for playing their respective parts. What’s unique about this particular situation, however, is that Endgame showed Thor at his worst overall state; as he went through depression over failing to Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War, the God of Thunder spent the next five years letting himself go. By the time he was recruited for the time heist, he gained a significant amount of weight and was clearly still reeling from their loss to the Mad Titan.

It’s unclear how much has time passed between the events of Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder, but the last time the hero was in the MCU, he was still on the heavier side. Despite having a more cheery disposition thanks to a pep talk with his mother and the ultimate defeat of Thanos, he didn’t magically lose the weight he gained during his darkest time. Now, when he returns to the franchise, just like Hemsworth, the hero will also more likely be the fittest he’s ever been. While this might just be a coincidence, it can also have narrative ramifications for the movie. The bigger and stronger Thor in Love & Thunder can be a reaction to his previous physical state, a way to bounce back and establish himself. At the end of Endgame, he finally accepted that deep inside, he’s not fit to be the King of Asgard, relinquishing the responsibility to Valkyrie. Instead, he joined the Guardians of the Galaxy for a new adventure. This may have allowed him to focus on rehabilitating himself, hence his transformation in Thor: Love and Thunder.

As Thor’s physicality in Endgame was clearly tied to his depression and despair, his new look in the upcoming MCU film can also be a reflection of his state of mind. While there is nothing inherently wrong with being fat, Fat Thor was not Thor in his natural or happiest state. Doing something that he truly wants like exploring the universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy may have helped him overcome the PTSD from Thanos’ successfully wiping half of life in front of him in Infinity War. Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon, in particular, may have helped him in this regard considering that both cosmic heroes have also gone through tremendous trauma in their personal lives, and yet, they continue to persevere. As revealed in Thor: Love and Thunder set images, Thor will somehow maintain his relationship with the rag-tag team of heroes as most of them will also be in the movie, albeit just briefly. For the God of Thunder’s personal arc, this means a more confident, perhaps even happier version of the character.

What’s curious now is if Thor: Love and Thunder will still show Fat Thor. While the character will clearly no longer be in that physical state for most of the movie, seeing how he actually lost weight will be great for storytelling; it will also make the hero more relatable and endearing. Finally, showing this transformation will emphasize that Fat Thor wasn’t just for laughs in Avengers: Endgame.
