Thor vs Dark Phoenix Kicks Off the Avengers Multiversal War

Warning: contains a preview for Avengers #51

The Multiversal War is coming for the Avengers, and it’s about to kick off in the hottest way possible in the pages of Avengers #751. The Dark Phoenix is knocking on the gates of Asgard, and Thor is ready to answer, setting the stage for the clash between the Avengers and the Multiversal Masters of Evil.

Avengers #750 was a showcase of Jason Aaron’s work on the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, pulling together a lot of storylines laid by the writer since he began working on the book, and introducing what is set to be the Avenger’s biggest challenge yet: Doom Supreme and his Multiversal Masters of Evil, a collection of the worst versions of the worst foes of the Avengers, working together to stop the “Age of Heroes” from ever occurring on every Earth in the Multiverse. They are achieving that by traveling into the past of each Earth and killing its version of the Prehistoric Avengers, whose exact purpose was to protect the Age of Heroes in its earliest stage. Doom has promised the real mastermind behind this plan, the devil Mephisto, to leave Earth-616 for last, but he breaks his promise and now the villains are about to attack Marvel’s main universe. Meanwhile, the strongest member of the Avengers, the All-Father Thor, is busy dealing with family issues.

A preview of Avengers #51 by Jason Aaron and Juan Frigeri, shared by AIPT, shows Thor reeling from the recent revelation that the cosmic force of destruction known as the Phoenix could be his mother. While the All-Father of Asgard is venting his frustration using the Destroyer armor as a punching bag, the current host of the Phoenix, Maya Lopez (Echo), arrives at the Rainbow Bridge demanding a meeting with Thor to discuss the issue. After the guardian of Bifrost, Sif, refuses, it seems like a fight is about to break out, but then Maya realizes that everything around her is frozen in time, and she hears an ominous voice reminding her that “a Phoenix was made to go Dark.” The voice likely belongs to the Dark Phoenix of the Multiversal Masters of Evil, who also has a resemblance to Madame Masque, and has a pet Wolverine on the leash.

The Multiversal War has been teased for a long time in the pages of Avengers. Mephisto has been shown scheming to cull the Age of Heroes in its cradle since the beginning of mankind, and he may have found the perfect tool in this terrifying version of a classic group of Avengers’ foes. The team is made up of Doom Supreme (a Doctor Doom who is also the Sorcerer Supreme of his dimension), Dark Phoenix, a young Thanos, King Killmonger (conqueror of both Wakanda and Asgard and clad in a Destroyer armor), the Ghost Goblin (a version of Norman Osborn who became the Ghost Rider), and Herr Venom the Black Skull (a symbiote-clad Red Skull). To warn the Avengers, a mysterious being known as Avenger Prime has sent the cybernetic soldiers known as the Deathloks throughout the Multiverse, and they have arrived on Earth-616 too. But the Multiversal Masters of Evil follow close behind them to ensure their warning is never delivered.

It is very likely that the influence of the Dark Phoenix will cause Echo to clash with Thor in Asgard, taking advantage of the tensions that exist between the two. For how destructive a confrontation between the Phoenix and the All-Father Thor can be, it will be just the opening salvo in the Multiversal War that is waiting for the Avengers. Avengers #51 goes on sale December 22, 2021.
