Western Games Red Dead Redemption Fans Might Enjoy

Anyone hankering for more interactive cowboy fun after putting down Red Dead Redemption 2 has plenty of options from a multitude of gaming genres.

Despite being one of the dominant themes in media throughout the last century, westerns like Red Dead Redemption 2 have been out of fashion for most of the lifespan of video games. By the 1980s, the world was fascinated by Real American Heroes, Masters of the Universe, and mutated Turtles named after the painters of the renaissance. Any heroics at high noon are strictly a novelty, which leaves a smaller selection of games set in the Old West than one might think. Still, for players who can’t get enough rootin’ and or tootin’ after their fifth playthrough of Rockstar’s open-world spectacle, there are quite a few alternate options to scratch the cowboy itch.

Special mention must first be made of the two other games in the Red Dead series so far. Because of the 2 in the title, most players will at least be aware of the original Red Dead Redemption, of which RDR2 is a direct prequel. The Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 original still holds up even when compared to the sequel, and some prefer its lighter tone to Rockstar’s 2018 release. What fewer players may know about is the third game, known as Red Dead Revolver. Originally to be published by Capcom onto the PlayStation 2 and Xbox as a follow up to their classic arcade hit Gun.Smoke, Rockstar acquired the game and the studio behind it before release in 2004. While it lacks the open world of the next two games in the series, it does introduce the Dead Eye mechanic and several other narrative elements that would continue forward into the more well-known sequels.

Because Western games are a theme rather than a set genre, players looking to experience the full breadth of cowboy gaming will have to have a varied taste. From full motion video to arcade shoot ’em ups, protagonists with ten-gallon hats have been all over the place throughout the years. Stop waiting for the next Red Dead Online update and check out everything the Western has to offer in the world of video games.

Guide an undead gunslinger armed with a deadly revolver through the endless mazes of the afterlife in Raw Fury’s excellent procedural Western roguelite West of Dead. A critically acclaimed indie twin stick shooter that came out just last year, West of Dead is currently available on Game Pass on console and PC for those in the Xbox ecosystem. With a main character voiced by Ron Pearlman of Hellboy fame and a host of horrors worthy of the Weird West setting to slay, anyone with a penchant for cowboy fiction is sure to find hours of enjoyment here.

Like RDR2 and classic Konami beat ’em ups? Try Sunset Riders

A lesser-known entry into Konami’s golden age of arcade games, Sunset Riders is a 1991 arcade release that eventually saw ports to the Super Nintendo and Genesis. Players take the role of up to four bounty hunters taking out wanted outlaws with Contra-style gunslinging. The game gained notoriety for going unreleased in the Xbox 360-era arcade rerelease platform Game Room but is now a part of Hamster’s Arcade Archives lineup on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Dillon the armadillo may be best recognized in 2021 as one of the numerous assist trophies in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but he’s also the start of a trio of Nintendo 3DS westerns developed by Japanese studio Vanpool.

Combining tower defense and action gameplay, the games have Dillion and his crew defending Old West towns from rock creatures intent on breaking things up. All three games are still available on the eShop and make for great portable experiences for anyone still sporting a 3DS.

Like RDR2 and tactics? Try Desperados III

Desperados III is a revival of the Desperados series by Mimimi Games and THQ Nordic that released on console and PC in June 2020. A real-time tactics game that leans heavily into stealth, Desperados is all about utilizing each of the five main characters and their unique abilities to their full potential. Vision cones, hiding bodies, and literally tying up loose ends with a length of rope are the order of the day. The game has received a load of free updates since release, making this a sizable Old West adventure that takes its setting as seriously as Rockstar’s classic.

Like RDR2 and FPS games? Try Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

Techland’s Call of Juarez series is a hidden gem among the last few generations of games. This is especially true of its middle entry, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. The games feature an authentic Western world and a grand story told across several games. The third game, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, tries for a Neo-Western tale that gets bogged down in generic modern tropes, but the first two entries in the trilogy are still well worth a look on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Like RDR2 and Hades? Try Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

A mostly unrelated spinoff to the Call of Juarez series, Gunslinger surpasses its predecessors with an over the top gameplay style and a unique translation of Old West tall tales. The entire game features narration from a wandering stranger sipping on alcohol in a saloon. As he keeps exaggerating his tales, the gameplay changes things up by adapting to the narration. Few games outside the catalog of Hades developer Supergiant Games have narration that’s so integral to their enjoyment.

Like Red Dead Redemption 2 and bad movies? Try Mad Dog McCree

A pair of legendary light gun FMV games that premiered in arcades in the early 1990s and eventually wound up on modern platforms like Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and iOS, the Mad Dog McCree games are goofy and over-the-top to a fault.

Players take the role of a wandering stranger who’s tasked with gunning down an entire town’s worth of associates of notorious banded Mad Dog McCree. Come for the gunslinging, stay for the forced line reads and physics-defying death scenes.

Like RDR2 and horror? Try Darkwatch

Returning to the Weird West, Darkwatch is a 2005 first-person shooter mixing Westerns with horror and steampunk for a truly unique combination. Players take control of vampire gunslinger Jericho Cross as he hunts supernatural forces across the frontier. His powers include night vision, the ability to drain life from opponents, and damaging silver bullets. Developed by High Moon Studios, this high-concept FPS was praised highly in its day, but never saw a follow-up from publisher Capcom.

2021 has several other Western games to look out for, likely spurred on by the success of Red Dead Retribution 2. Weird West is a top-down RPG set in a supernatural western town brought to life by former Arkane Studios developers. It’s also worth looking out for Evil West, a combat-focused third-person action game featuring a “Wild West Superhero” from Flying Wild Hog, the creators of the modern Shadow Warrior games. With these and other interesting titles due for a release in the near future, perhaps the wide spectrum of the Western and all its subgenres can finally bear fruit in the world of video games.
