For years, the film and beauty industries played a leading role in creating stereotypes of the types of bodies that are viewed as “acceptable” or “attractive.” Lately, the industry has made moves to address that and encourage body positivity and the acceptance of all body types. More movies and TV shows now feature characters who would otherwise be marginalized, shown in a positive light rather than as the butt of jokes demeaning their physical attributes.
While these moves are a step in the right direction, the industry still has a long way to go before it can perfectly capture and relay the true meaning behind the message of body positivity and encouraging inclusivity. Some movies preaching body positivity manage to empower people to love their bodies no matter what they look like. Others miss the mark, despite their good intentions.
10 I Feel Pretty (2018)
For most of her life, Renee (Amy Schumer) felt unpretty until an accident during a spin class gave her a new perspective—literally. To the rest of the characters and the audience, she was still the same person, but she was convinced she finally had the body of her dreams. Her renewed confidence in her looks made her braver, bolder, and happier and she went after everything she wanted without hesitation.
Underneath the comedy, I Feel Pretty has a message about body positivity even though it was portrayed in a roundabout and flawed way that some viewers took offense to. Due to her head injury, Renee started loving the way she saw herself and although it took a while for her to do that again once she recovered, she learned to be comfortable in her own skin. The body positivity movement encourages self-love as well, which was what this movie tried to show.
9 Tall Girl (2019)
At six-foot-one and a half, Jody’s the tallest person at her school. The constant bullying from her schoolmates makes her feel self-conscious about her height and lose her self-esteem. When a Swedish exchange student who’s just as tall as her joins their school, she starts to feel less alone and hopeful that she can finally be with someone who’ll accept her the way she is.
Tall Girl didn’t receive the best reviews because many people feel like she wasn’t that tall, to begin with, and that her problem was inconsequential in the face of things other people suffer. However, those negative reviews neglect the fact that her feelings of being marginalized and bullied because of her body type are what body positivity tries to address by encouraging inclusivity for all shapes, sizes, colors, abilities, and so much more.
8 Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
After winning a local pageant, Olive gets a call to participate in the national contest, leading to a road trip with her family. During the trip, she learns some harsh truths about beauty standards in the pageant world and starts to question if she’s pretty enough or has the right looks to win.
Little Miss Sunshine addresses the unrealistic standards of beauty and body types in beauty pageants and stereotypical expectations that the contestants have to look a certain way, dress in a particular style, and behave in a specific way. Olive doesn’t fit this stereotype at all but her confidence in herself and how she looks helps her break it and challenge these toxic perceptions.
7 Last Holiday (2006)
After discovering that she only has three weeks left to live, Georgia decides to do all the things she was too afraid to do and not let life pass her by. She quits her horrid job, takes a holiday to a fancy place, and splurges on beautiful clothes, fancy meals, and the experiences of a lifetime.
Last Holiday is a lovely holiday movie message is that life is short, unpredictable, and shouldn’t be wasted entertaining feelings of not being worthy of good things or relationships because of appearances. During her last holiday, Georgia learns to love herself, embrace the time she has left, and enjoy her life without letting fear or appearances hold her back.
6 Hairspray (2007)
Hairspray, featuring Zac Eforn and Nikki Blonsky among other notable names is a heartwarming film filled with song and dance, based on the famous 2002 Broadway musical sharing the same name. Tracy (Nikki), an adorable plus sized 16-year-old girl with a passion for dancing and a heart full of dreams finds her way onto a dancing show side by side with her biggest crush, LinK (Zac).
It’s almost impossible not to get a burst of energy just from watching Tracy dance like there’s no tomorrow without missing a step. Her performance was filled with so much positive energy that extended into the movie’s message to the audience to not let their differences stop them from chasing their dreams.
5 Dumplin’ (2018)
In the movie Dumplin’ Willowdean, nicknamed Dumplin’ by her mother, struggles with her self-esteem because of her body, especially since her mother is a stereotypical beauty queen. In honor of her aunt, who didn’t have the courage to compete in a beauty pageant because of her body, Will signs up to compete.
As Will takes a stand for body positivity in the pageant—an industry notorious for body stereotypes—she learns to work through her securities, embrace herself, and build a better relationship with her mom. The movie relays the message of body positivity by focusing on Will accepting herself and adding in other storylines that help her reach that point, making it one of the best coming of age movies.
4 Real Women Have Curves (2002)
While Ana (America Ferrera) dreams of going to college, her mother insists she works at a dress factory instead. Apart from that, Ana’s mother constantly fat-shames her daughter and defends her taunts as something she does out of love.
In spite of her mother’s taunts, Ana learns to accept and love her body, along with several other women like her. The movie has a great message that’s relevant now more than ever, regarding challenging stereotypes and the negative imagery around body types, which can—sadly—be perpetuated by the people who should be the most supportive.
3 Thunder Force (2021)
Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy star side by side in this Netflix superhero movie. Years after parting ways, they have a messy reunion, which leads to Lydia (Melissa) accidentally injecting herself with a superstrength serum. Together with Emily (Octavia)—who has the power of invisibility—they work together to save the world from Miscreants.
Thunder Force is one of the first movies to feature plus-sized superheroes in a positive light and show that women can save the world, no matter their size. The superhero genre has, so far, stereotyped the people who play superheroes to look a certain way. Thanks to recent strides through movies like Black Panther and Thunder Force, the superhero genre is becoming more inclusive and this superhero comedy is one more step in the right direction.
2 Isn’t It Romantic (2019)
After a mugging goes horribly wrong, Rebel Wilson wakes up in a RomCom version of her life. People randomly break out into song, she wakes up with perfect hair and a perfectly made-up face, and scenes keep cutting like she’s in an actual movie.
Although Isn’t It Romantic pokes fun at romance movie tropes, it has a beautiful message underneath about self-love and body positivity. Putting the focus on Natalie gaining self-confidence and fighting the belief that she wasn’t someone who could be in the spotlight or get the Pretty Woman kind of love makes this one of the best movies for championing body positivity.

Girl’s Trip features some of the best names in Hollywood. Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and Tiffany Haddish are four best friends, reuniting for the first time in years for an epic trip that’s filled with fun, booze, and drama.
The four women rock their different bodies to perfection, displaying an inspiring amount of confidence in their looks. Each of them represents different types of women and promotes the acceptance of all bodies. Their confidence is a true game-changer in encouraging others to accept and love their own bodies as the movie celebrates the beauty of diverse body types.
