Netflix has officially premiered its latest film, tick, tick… BOOM! to positive reviews from critics and audiences. Lin Manuel Miranda’s debut follows Jonathan Larson, a soon-to-be thirty-year-old composer and writer, on the verge of presenting his long-gestating musical, Superbia, for the first time.

Frantic and full of heart, tick, tick… BOOM! is a theater fan’s dream. The movie has a small cast of prominent characters, led by a never-better Andrew Garfield as Larson. Every one of these figures contributes to making the picture a smashing success, thanks to their charm, charisma, and contagious musical energy.

9 Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim is a living legend as one of the most prominent and acclaimed composers in musical theatre history. He’s the genius mind behind many Broadway shows that eventually became movies, including Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He also wrote the lyrics for two of the most iconic musicals of all time, West Side Story and Gypsy.

Despite having only a few scenes, Sondheim’s shadow looms large over the entire movie. He is Jon’s inspiration and idol; he constantly compares himself to Sondheim, using the composer’s absurdly successful career as a barometer to measure success. In the end, it’s precisely Sondheim’s encouraging words that further inspire Larson to keep going and write his next musical.

8 Ira Weitzman

Jonathan claims Ira Weitzman, the Musical Theatre Director at Playwrights Horizons, is the first real theater person to bet on him. Ira is funding Jonathan’s ambitious and promising musical, Superbia, offering encouragement and financial support.

Ira is kind but realistic. He offers plenty of help to Jonathan without being overly attached or sentimental. Ira repeats the same thing Jon heard from Stephen Sondheim, telling him he needs an extra song for Superbia’s lead female character, a piece of advice that ultimately pays off.

7 Rosa Stevens

If there’s one sure thing is that Judith Light will always understand the assignment. A favorite of prolific television producer Ryan Murphy, the actress constantly delivers quality work, whether in one-episode parts (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) or series-long roles (Ugly Betty), comedy (The Politician), or drama (Impeachment: American Crime Story).

Light plays one of the movie’s most vital characters, Rosa Stevens, Jon’s agent with plenty of industry connections. She appears near the third act, after a year of not returning Jon’s calls. She provides some tough love, but it becomes blatantly clear that her heart is in the right place. She also delivers one of the film’s best monologues, delivered expertly by Light with the perfect mix of warmth and dry wit, and reminds Jon that a writer writes.

6 Karessa Johnson

Ever since her breakthrough role in High School Musical, Vanessa Hudgens has carved a solid career in film and television. In the last few years, she played two very famous characters in Fox’s live musical productions, Rizzo in Grease: Live and Maureen Johnson in Rent: Live.

Hudgens plays Karessa, a supporting role that still makes an impact. Karessa is the lead in Jon’s musical, Superbia; she doesn’t get a ton of speaking scenes but features prominently in the soundtrack. Mainly, Hudgens is crucial in two of tick, tick… BOOM!’s best musical numbers, “Therapy” and “Come to Your Senses.”

5 Freddy

Ben Levi Ross, a relative newcomer best-known for playing the roles of Evan, Connor, and Jared in the Broadway production of the mega-hit Dear Evan Hansen, gives life to Freddy. He is a co-worker of Jon’s at the famed Moondance Diner in SoHo and one of his closest friends.

Freddy is HIV positive and spends a considerable portion of the movie at the hospital. His role offers one of the movie’s most powerful and emotional plots and serves as a reminder of the devastating HIV and AIDS epidemic of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Ross plays Freddy with just the right amount of vulnerability, leaving a lasting impression on both Jon and the audience.

4 Carolyn

Like Freddy, Carolyn is an employee of the Moondance Diner. She’s played by MJ Rodriguez, who recently made history by becoming the first transgender woman to earn an Emmy Award nomination in a major acting category for her role in the groundbreaking series, Pose.

Carolyn is a constant presence at the diner, perfectly capturing the hectic and stressful environment. She also provides updates on Freddy’s health to the over-worked Jonathan while still offering words of encouragement. The role could easily be a standard “best friend” part, of Rodriguez’s magnetic presence elevates it, making Carolyn one the movie’s most endearing presence.

3 Susan Wilson

The girlfriend role can often be thankless, a seductive yet underdeveloped figure meant to humanize the emotionally distant genius. tick, tick… BOOM!’s Susan avoids this hurtful characterization thanks to some well-written scenes, an eleven o’clock number, and Alexandra Shipp’s vulnerable and committed performance.

Shipp is best-known to audiences for her roles in the well-meaning rom-com Love, Simon, and Fox’s epic but now-finished X-Men franchise. She plays Susan as a concerned and supporting girlfriend without ever concealing the building frustration within. She has some of the movie’s most emotional scenes, finally letting it all out during a cathartic fight scene with Jonathan. The breathtaking musical number “Come to Your Senses” cements her as one of the story’s most compelling characters while also displaying Shipp’s considerable vocal chops.

2 Michael

Robin de Jesús is a constant standout in everything he does. He nearly ran away with The Boys in the Band, stealing focus from other seasoned performers like Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, and Zachary Quinto. He repeats that trend in tick, tick… BOOM!, playing Michael, Jon’s best friend and closest confident.

The movie successfully avoids the tired “gay best friend” cliché thanks to de Jesús’ strength as a performer. During the movie’s first act, Michael is an overly optimistic presence, quickly earning the audience’s sympathy. Things take a turn thanks to a heartbreaking twist in the third act. The devastating revelation carries a ton of emotional weight, and by the end, Michael is the film’s most sympathetic character. Hopefully, the Academy remembers de Jesus’ exceptional performance come Oscar season.

1 Jonathan Larson

Ever since Boy, A, Andrew Garfield has delivered consistently brilliant performances. Whether playing supporting roles in movies like The Social Network and Never Let Me Go or leading prestigious productions like Hacksaw Ridge and Silence, Garfield is a compelling and fascinating performer.

Garfield delivers the best work of his career in tick, tick… BOOM! His Larson is manic in all the best ways, flawed, sympathetic, frustrating, and absolutely captivating. As the best characters do, Garfield’s Larson captures the audience’s attention and never lets go. Viewers laugh, cry, and ultimately celebrate along with him, going through a whole rainbow of emotions in just two hours.
