Tiger King 2 Showed What It Should Have Been (And Still Failed)

Netflix’s Tiger King 2 shows what it should have been, yet still fails. Following the documentary’s incredibly popular first season, the follow-up installment observes the events that have occurred in the wake of the documentary’s release. Unfortunately, it chooses to focus on the wrong things.

Tiger King season 1 follows the gradual downfall of zookeeper Joe Exotic as well as his ongoing feud with Carole Baskin, which leads to Exotic being sentenced to 22 years in prison for planning a murder-for-hire against Baskin. In addition, viewers see interviews with other individuals prominent in the big cat industry. As mentioned, Tiger King 2 follows the events in the wake of Joe Exotic’s conviction, showing briefly how the series has impacted the world, while also focusing on the ongoing investigations into Don Lewis’ disappearance as well as whether Joe Exotic was set up by his zoo’s co-owner, Tiger King’s Jeff Lowe.

Ultimately, for it to succeed, Tiger King 2 would have been better suited to focus on how the documentary series impacted the world, particularly in how several people made the show a part of their daily lives. Viewers see that very briefly in the first episode, but after that, all the focus goes to the investigations into Don Lewis, Tim Stark, and whether Joe is set up or not. While these can make for interesting viewing, they ultimately proved unnecessary because the series could not answer any questions due to the ongoing investigations or simply because there was no concrete answer.

In the first episode, “Beg Your Pardon,” Tiger King 2 shows the series’ worldwide impact. Viewers see the various news stories and the numerous TikTok videos made in response to the series’ reception. Even John Reinke, one of the main interviewees in the first season, is shown signing autographs and taking selfies. The main focal point of the episode surrounds the campaign to get Joe Exotic a presidential pardon. Coordinated by Eric Love, the campaign makes several attempts to get attention for its cause, including making an appearance at the pro-Trump rally in Washington on January 6, 2021, ultimately leaving before the riots at the Capitol break out after an awkward and confrontational encounter with a Trump supporter. As viewers know, the campaign for Joe Exotic’s pardon failed, but it’s still interesting to watch as it explores the full impact the documentary series has on the world and especially how it became a part of people’s lives. Unfortunately, that focus is short-lived.

Overall, Tiger King 2 should have kept its focus on how the first season affected the world. Focusing heavily on the investigations ultimately fell flat because there isn’t enough information given to offer any concrete or definitive answers. If there ends up being a third season of Tiger King, maybe then could that work. But ultimately, the Netflix documentary had a perfect opportunity to explore the impact of its success and failed to capitalize on it.
