While both Instagram and TikTok offer singing and karaoke features, they do differ in terms of the app experience. Understanding the fundamental difference will make it easier to determine which app is better for you.
Instagram is a photo and video sharing app owned by Facebook and with more than one billion users, the app is popular with people and businesses. Users can post images and videos to create stories and share their experiences. More recently, Instagram has been taking steps forward to compete with rival social media services, including TikTok. Speaking of which, TikTok formerly Musical.ly, is a popular app for short and viral videos. Recently, TikTok hit the coveted position of having achieved two billion downloads. Marketed towards Gen Z, TikTok is known for viral challenges and cringy videos although the service has been trying to reach a wider audience through additional features, such as mobile games.
Although the two apps are fundamentally different, they are still competitors, and the gap between them is getting smaller all the time. Last year, Instagram adding on-screen lyrics to support a new Stories layer. As TechCrunch pointed out at the time, TikTok did not wait long to respond with the introduction of its own on-screen captions to ensure Instagram did not pull ahead. As a result, choosing between the two became that little bit harder when it comes to singing and karaoke.
Instagram or TikTok Best For Music Features?
Instagram lets users add music from a catalog of songs, including Drake, Justin Bieber and Björk. People can easily scroll through lyrics and adjust their place on the screen. However, it may mute a person’s video and replace the sound. The app does not let people save the music, and a user will need another app or video editing software to create a proper karaoke video. That said, Instagram’s co-watching feature allows friends to hold short karaoke sessions. TikTok makes it easier for a user to add music and sing. In addition, the controls can help a person adjust the song volume, and they can use other in-app editing features to create fun effects and transitions.
TikTok has a history with music, and Instagram is missing that crucial background. The video-looping app even impacts on the music industry. Instagram may have used Billie Eilish for their Instagram Music campaign, but TikTok includes the artist’s music in its song library. Considering Instagram is mostly about images, using it as a source for karaoke has never really been the goal. While Instagram users can now use music to support pictures or brief videos, the reality is the on-screen lyrics feature is an attempt to compete with TikTok. As a result, those who wants to use an app to sing and participate in karaoke, will likely be better off choosing TikTok over Instagram.
