Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

He was the scourge of the world as Floki had predicted and everything he did brought more death and bloodshed. However, Ivar was still the son of Ragnar Lothbrok, and without him, Vikings wouldn’t have been so interesting.

Everyone underestimated him and most of them regretted it. Even Bjorn who was supposed to be his elder brother and leader ended up dying at Ivar’s hands. While Ivar’s testament doesn’t exactly fit that of a good brother, he wasn’t always the scourge of Ragnar’s family. On rare occasions, he stood with his brothers and did the right thing, although his evils outnumbered those few brotherly gestures.

10 Brotherly: Accompanying Ragnar To England

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Ragnar Lothbrok wasn’t a saint, but he was still the greatest Viking that had ever lived. He had raised his family from being peasant farmers to the most famous people in the world. His sons owed everything they had to him, so when they refused to accompany him to England, they were just being ungrateful.

Ivar chose to use that chance to bond with Ragnar and understand him as a father rather than just the great king he was told of. Of all the people Ragnar’s fame had helped, Ivar is the only one who chose to stand with him at his lowest moment. He gave Ragnar the compassionate shoulder his brothers denied him and didn’t complain about it.

9 Awful: Killing Sigurd

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Bjorn and Ubbe never knew just how dangerous their little brother was until they watched him kill Sigurd. It was the first sign of Ivar’s monstrous behavior. Sigurd and Ivar were mortal enemies from childhood. Sigurd would never hurt Ivar though, as he still considered him his brother.

All Sigurd proposed was that the brothers stick together and act as a single unit of Ragnar’s sons. It was wrong of him to insult Ivar’s impotence and love for Aslaug, but it was just an argument between brothers. Sigurd then pointed out that Ivar was unpredictable and childish. Ivar just proved Sigurd’s point when he killed him for such a minor disagreement.

8 Brotherly: Coming With His Brothers To Avenge Ragnar

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Ivar didn’t always agree with his brothers but when the moment came to do the rightful by their father, Ivar was there. He accompanied the brothers and tested combat for the first time as he helped them kill king Aelle’s men.

Ivar was the one that pointed to the spot where Ragnar had died and even told king Aelle that gold was not enough price to pay for Ragnar’s death. He also suggested performing the blood eagle on Ecbert although Bjorn objected to that. All hell broke loose afterward, but while the revenge mission lasted, he was his brothers’ keeper.

7 Awful: Shaming Ubbe and Hvitserk

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Ivar lost Ubbe as a brother the day he shamed him in front of the Great Army in York. Ubbe was Aslaug’s first son and Ivar’s elder brother. He didn’t enjoy cruelty and senseless fighting which is why he proposed peace negotiations with the Saxons. He was still the wiser leader compared to Ivar and Hvitserk wasn’t wrong to follow him.

If Ivar had supported Ubbe’s lead, the Great Army would have achieved more success in England than being confined to York which later became impossible to hold. Ivar’s ego got the better of him when Ubbe failed to convince Aethelwulf. He chose to usurp power from Ubbe and confuse Hvitserk hence dividing Ragnar’s family even more.

6 Brotherly: Defending Ragnar From His Brothers

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

When Ragnar left the brothers and the throne after losing the battle in Frankia to Rollo, everyone was angry with him. No one understood why he would leave his kingdom and family. They were even angrier when they heard about how he kept the destruction of the settlement in England a secret. Ivar wouldn’t allow his brothers to tarnish their father’s memory though.

Ragnar’s memory is the only thing that kept them together and that day, Ivar protected it when he explained to then Ragnar’s possible reasons. He didn’t put it in the best of words ( He said raiding Frankia was better than avenging peasant farmers), but he helped the brothers understand their father and retain confidence in him.

5 Awful: Misusing And Hurting Hvitserk

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Hvitserk was older than Ivar but he ended up being his pawn, used and dumped at Ivar’s will. It was partly Hvitserk’s mistake because he abandoned Ubbe, but Ivar just wasn’t a good brother. Ivar exploited Hvitserk’s love for him and used him to achieve his selfish interests.

As Hvitserk complained to him while they were in Kyiv, Ivar never saw Hvitserk as a human being. He killed Thora, Hvitserk’s girlfriend, by burning her alive leaving Hvitserk to hate him the rest of his life. Hvitserk was also forced to blame himself for the rest of his life as everyone judged him as evil as Ivar.

4 Brotherly: Listening To Bjorn Over Punishing Lagertha

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Sigurd is the only one of Aslaug’s children that didn’t care much about avenging his mother’s death. He always blamed her for abandoning him and Siggy giving Ivar all the attention. Ivar, on the other hand, was very angry with Lagertha, he even challenged her to one on one combat.

Lagertha was wrong to kill Aslaug and Ivar’s anger was more than justified but listening to Bjorn, at least on that occasion, was good for the family. When Bjorn told him that he would have to fight him before killing Lagertha, Ivar became sensible. He backed down and decided to focus on avenging his father, although he never gave up on his mission to kill Lagertha.

3 Awful: Forcing Ubbe To Fight Against Hvitserk

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

On the surface, Ivar fooled everyone that the only reason why he wanted to overthrow Lagertha was so that he could avenge Aslaug. However, if that was all he wanted, then he would have left Kattegat and followed her to England when she escaped, leaving the people to live in peace, but he didn’t.

He turned his feud with Lagertha into a bloodbath even after Bjorn begged him to negotiate and avoid a civil war. His stubbornness created rifts that could never be repaired. He refused to listen to sense and pitched families against each other forcing Ubbe to fight with Hvitserk and Harald to kill Halfdan.

2 Brotherly: Saving Hvitserk

Vikings 5 Ways Ivar Was A Good Brother (& 5 He Was Awful)

Hvitserk happily joined arms with Harald, Olaf, and Bjorn to overthrow Ivar because he had finally seen him for who he was. However, Ivar never hated Hvitserk for that choice. When Hvitserk was banished by Bjorn for killing Lagertha, Ivar saved him and allowed him to join Oleg’s army.

Hvitserk was still angry at him and even beat him up once but when Oleg told Ivar to kill Hvitserk, he chose to save him instead. When the brothers went to England with Harald and Hvitserk was injured in battle, Ivar told his brother to stand down, saving him from what would have been certain death.

1 Awful: Killing Bjorn

Rollo betrayed Ragnar many times but Ragnar would never kill his own brother. That is how brothers are supposed to be, but Ivar was just too damaged to see that. Bjorn was Ivar’s elder brother, and he had many reasons to kill Ivar, but he didn’t.

Bjorn knew that brothers don’t have to agree on everything but they can’t kill each other either. Ivar on the other hand was totally mad and he chose to kill Bjorn.
