FF7 Remake Why Jessie May Not Actually Be Dead

The story of Final Fantasy 7 Remake went in a drastically different direction than fans expected, and there are hints that another change could be happening in the sequel, as Jessie might have survived her original fate. Jessie Rasberry is one of the members of Barret’s incarnation of Avalanche, and she dies in both FF7 and FF7 Remake.

As Avalanche’s resident engineer, Jessie is the one who creates the fake IDs they use to travel between sectors, as well as the bombs used to destroy the Mako Reactors. Her characterization changed drastically between FF7 and FF7 Remake; in the original game, she is shy and unable to express her feelings to Cloud. In FF7 Remake, she’s the most outgoing member of the team and constantly flirts with Cloud. Her fate is the same across both incarnations of the character, though, as she dies defending the Sector 7 pillar from Shinra troops.

But much of FF7 Remake’s story doesn’t follow that of the original game. In FF7, Biggs and Wedge also died fighting alongside Jessie, but Biggs survives the events of Remake, while Wedge’s fate is left ambiguous. Biggs’ final scene shows him resting in bed, with Jessie’s bandana and glove on a table beside him. This led to speculation that the timeline change that appears to have saved Zack could also have saved Jessie. FF7 Remake’s creators at Square Enix have since dropped some hints that Jessie may have survived, after all.

FF7 Remake’s Changed Timeline Might Save Jessie

In the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Material Ultimania book, released only in Japan, co-director Motomu Toriyama said he would like to see Jessie appear on the Gold Saucer stage someday. It’s revealed in FF7 Remake that Jessie wanted to sing at the Gold Saucer, but she was unable to perform at her debut event, as her father was in an accident. Toriyama’s quote has led to speculation that Jessie might reappear as an amnesiac, with no memory of her time in Avalanche, when the party eventually travels to the Gold Saucer.

The most recent hint comes from the March 2021 Japanese PlayStation “Play! Play! Play!” livestream, where producer Yoshinori Kitase was interviewed about the upcoming FF7 Remake Intergrade. According to frequent Square Enix game news translator aitaikimochi on Twitter, Kitase was directly asked if Jessie was alive. In response, he gave a “nervous” laugh and said he couldn’t comment further.

MC: Jessie is alive, right? She must be alive… Kitase: *nervous laughter* MC: What, did the internet connection suddenly go bad or something? Kitase: Sorry I can’t say anything about that… LOL…#FF7RPPP pic.twitter.com/0QAuu9Fv0V

It would have been easy for Kitase to confirm Jessie’s death, but he didn’t outright shut down the fan theories. One of the most exciting things about FF7 Remake deviating from the plot of the original game is that fans have years to speculate about the future of the series. It’s possible characters like Jessie, Wedge, and Zack are still alive to fight another day, but no one will know for sure until future Final Fantasy 7 Remake games are released.
