Tiny GotG Game Details Show A Dysfunctional Group Dynamic

When Eidos-Montréal first announced Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the Guardians’ team dynamics was a vital component to gameplay. The Guardians enjoy a level of unprofessionalism rarely embraced in other comic book media, and their zany personalities craft a perfect combination of humor and combat proficiency. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy captured each character’s wit and charm through increasingly creative ways, with many appearing in small details hidden during gameplay.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy occurs after a Galactic War, when the Chitauri allied with Thanos to conquer all known planets and civilization. After long, grueling years of battle and loss, the Galaxy’s forces beat the Chitauri back to their homeworld. Though the conflict ended, its effects reverberate throughout the known universe. Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, takes advantage of the chaos by creating a heroes-for-hire team known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. What begins as a mercenary gig turns into saving the galaxy from the Universal Church of Truth and its brainwashing ‘Promise’. Star-Lord is joined by Drax, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket to save the universe from this devastating new threat.

Unlike traditionally heroic teams like the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy have always been the underdogs. Coming from less than glamorous backgrounds and sporting unsuspecting, unique abilities, they’re not the most likely gang to save the world (or worlds) from imminent danger. Their banter with one another shows this both in cutscenes and gameplay and several critical details hidden throughout Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s hub. Interacting directly with characters is the most efficient way to learn information about different Guardians’ backstories, strengths, weaknesses, and fears. Still, observant players can learn their team just by examining the game’s more minor details.

Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy’s Hub Holds Many Secrets

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s tiniest detail concerns sticky notes located on the ship’s refrigerator. While most homes might leave sticky notes to remind residents to purchase milk or turn the lights off before going to bed, the Guardians go by another system. Small jokes such as “Make Food, Not War” spiral into entire conversations with participation from each team member. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord and Rocket enjoy more immature humor, while Gamora exhibits a level of sarcasm and wit above her compatriots, and Drax struggles to understand humor. Groot cannot write, but he can draw and does his best to contribute to the conversations with wild scribbles.

While the content of the messages characterizes the Guardians team, these Guardians of the Galaxy game easter eggs also tell a story about each hero-for-hire. The most obvious is Groot, who cannot write any letters (that players know of). However, his scribbling is often connected and crowded together. While his sub-elementary reading and writing skills can likely explain this, it also speaks to his protective personality and the interconnectedness of nature.

Meanwhile, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax leaves notes that reflect his personality and speaking patterns. Their contents refer to violence, death, and are humorously direct. Rocket’s notes, much like his dialogue, often looks down on his teammates by referring to them as “Morons” or reiterating the obvious in aggressive, scratch-like writing. This could reference his sharp personality or merely his raccoon biology. Meanwhile, Gamora and Star-Lord’s upbringing likely contained more education than the other members, leading to neater, more layered handwriting and grammar.

Marvel’s GOTG Gives Each Guardian Their Own Room (And Drama)

Like most Guardians of the Galaxy iterations, the Guardians reside within Peter Quill’s spaceship when not on missions or exploring different planets in the Guardians of the Galaxy game. Naturally, each Guardian receives their own room and designs it to their liking, inherently reflecting their personality. Star-Lord’s room in Marvel’s GOTG is the location players can visit most often and is packed with references to Earth rock culture and Easter eggs to Peter’s Ravager lifestyle. Star-Lord is frequently depicted as a capable fighter whose flippant attitude and greedy nature undercuts his leadership. His frequent sarcasm and scandalous love affairs often back him into a corner, leaving him scrambling to get a foothold in his own life. The Guardians’ involvement with the Universal Church of Truth and other influential organizations and leaders across the galaxy proves Star-Lord’s inability to take control of his life. The chaotic patterns of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game reflect nicely in the chaos of Peter’s room.

While the smaller Guardians of the Galaxy easter eggs of each room reflect each character, the drama surrounding the rooms throughout the game’s campaign is equally enjoyable. During the later half of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s story, Peter gets his room stolen twice by each new team member. The first time is after the team encounters Adam Warlock and recruits him to help cure the Church’s Promise. After an intense disagreement with the rest of the team, Adam Warlock takes Peter’s room and locks him out. After being ‘usurped,’ the group rags on Peter for a bit before sending him off to resolve the conflict. Later on, Peter’s room is stolen again by Nikki after the group votes to give her Peter’s room and set their leader on the couch. This good-natured teasing reflects the Guardians of the Galaxy game team’s sibling-like dynamic, with everyone fighting for the best room and throwing the ‘big sibling’ under the bus. Though the final room arrangements are unknown, the running joke of Peter losing his room becomes quite entertaining.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Game Ship Is Filthy

A room’s contents tell a lot about a person’s habits, personality, and history, while their character can also be portrayed by how they look after their space. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy adopts similar character traits while passively developing the team’s dynamics. While the messy nature of the spaceship suggests a lack of maturity or investment in the team by all members, it grows to reflect a level of comfort each Guardian enjoys in their new company. Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot have all suffered personal losses and breaches of trust. The inability to feel safe or at home on any planet likely resulted in some undesirable habits. Still, the spread of belongings suggests a deeper connection of each character to the ship.

Furthermore, despite each teammate having their own living quarters, the ship is filled with a chaotic array of various weapons, gadgets, and trash. It’s certainly not the cleanest location, and the inability for each Guardian to mesh with the others reflects the initial difficulties in working AS a team. Though the ship doesn’t become more organized as the campaign goes on, players begin to appreciate the logic behind different items and their placement. Without Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord to lead them and the ship to call home, most (if not all) of the Guardians would continue drifting throughout the galaxy without an anchor to keep their lives steady.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has many methods of fleshing out each Guardians’ bond with the rest of the team but goes beyond standard dialogue and cutscenes to show it. As a result, observant players can enjoy an entirely new level of connection between the gang, bringing about fresh, new links to the Guardians of the Galaxy.
