Titans Season 3 Has Wasted Superboy (On Purpose)

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Titans season 3, episode 11, “The Call Is Coming From Inside the House.”

While Conner Kent’s Superboy has been largely wasted in Titans season 3, it may have been an intentional choice. Despite the Titans coming to Gotham to become its new protectors in Batman’s absence, Conner has been put on the sidelines more often than not, and Titans season 3, episode 11 is probably one of the worst examples yet. However, one has to wonder if it’s because the clone of Superman and Lex Luthor (played by Joshua Orpin) is being saved for a larger story that’s yet to come for the HBO Max series.

In Titans season 3, episode 11, the Titans have been scattered across the city, having been made to look like criminal fugitives thanks to Scarecrow and Red Hood. The villains poisoned the city’s water supply with fear agents, then controlled the narrative so that the public would see Jason Todd as the hero instead. However, Dick Grayson’s Nightwing and Superboy have found themselves together, and Conner has been attempting to use a short-wave radio to get in contact with the rest of their team. Even so, when Dick is challenged by Red Hood in a showdown, he tells Conner to stay behind, putting him on the sidelines yet again as he has multiple times this season. Even when Conner grows angry and is determined to go, Nightwing knocks Superboy out using Kryptonite dust he got from Bruce Wayne’s office.

While it’s logically frustrating that Titans keeps wasting their most powerful member as the season has gone on, it’s possible that it could be for a reason. Given the handful of references and teases to Lex Luthor, and Conner’s fears that his “Lex” side could take over, perhaps a season 4 storyline focused on Superboy finally facing the DC villain is in the works. It would certainly be interesting to see Superboy being corrupted by Luthor after continually being snubbed over and over again.

While it makes sense that Superboy wouldn’t have as big of a role in a season that’s been largely defined by Gotham’s heroes and villains, the lengths to which Conner Kent has been wasted and sidelined is surprising, to say the least. Case in point, Nightwing facing Red Hood alone might have led to his death at the end of episode 11, creating an unnecessary risk seeing as how he could have had a literal half-Kryptonian as backup when/if things went south (which they very much did). It would make sense if this was setting up a story for season 4 about Conner feeling resentful, making him vulnerable to Lex’s manipulation. It’s also possible that the Kryptonite dust could have some adverse effects that Dick Grayson wasn’t expecting, potentially leading to awakening a greater darkness within the Superman/Luthor clone.

Regardless, Titans need to start using Superboy much more as the series continues. With all the times he’s been left out of the action or somehow inhibited, there needs to be some sort of payoff where he starts getting as much of a spotlight as his allies, either in the final episodes of season 3 or in a potential Titans season 4. Likewise, an arc featuring Lex Luthor and perhaps even Superman himself would certainly make up for the series wasting Conner Kent’s Superboy thus far.
