Warning! Spoilers for Dark Ages #2 by Marvel Comics below
In a world where his Iron Man armor has been rendered useless, Tony Stark has returned to a cave in a move that calls back the hero’s origin. In Dark Ages #2 by Marvel Comics, Stark creates a new lab inside a cave after power across the universe has been wiped out. Inside, he turns to alchemy and other experiments to bring Iron Man back to life in an all-new way.
Marvel’s Dark Ages miniseries imagines a world where a villain named the Unmaker nearly destroys the universe. Many heroes and villains die after its awakened, but Doctor Strange (before being killed) manages to open a portal that sends a powerful EMP blast at the cosmic juggernaut, which stops the attack. Unfortunately, while the Unmaker is stopped, the EMP knocks out power across the Globe, making everything from traffic lights to Iron Man’s armor powerless. In the new dark ages, survivors try to find a new solution to being a hero without using electricity.
In Dark Ages #2 by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC’s Joe Sabino, it’s revealed several conflicts and wars broke out after the power went out, leading to deaths of billions – including of some Avengers, like Hawkeye. However, after uniting together, things started to calm down, and life became as normal as it could be in a world with without power (and with bloodsucking vampires). Tony Stark ends up setting up his new headquarters alongside Pepper Potts in a cave, as he’s trying new experiments, such as turning lead into gold. Considering Iron Man’s armor was originally built in a cave, it’s a nice callback to his origin.
While Stark might seem like the one hero who couldn’t survive without power and the ability to use it to make new inventions, Marvel reveals he’s well-adjusted after the Unmaker’s attack. Unfortunately, a surprise visit from Captain America (who’s actually Mystique) turns out to be a capture-mission by Apocalypse, as the villainous mutant is looking to gain power all for himself and needs Tony’s help to do it. It’s like a reverse origin for Stark.
It’s sad to see Tony Stark seem so content with his new life inside a cave with Pepper – only to have it taken away from him by Apocalypse so he could help him gain power in a world without it. However, future teases have revealed that Tony will build his own steam-punk Iron Man suit. It seems creating it will be extremely valuable to fight on as Iron Man is forced to work alongside Apocalypse. Dark Ages #2 is in comic book stores now.
