Tom Hanks’ Pinocchio LiveAction Movie Is Coming to Disney in 2022

The live-action update of Pinocchio starring Tom Hanks has been slated for a 2022 release on Disney+. This film is just the latest in Disney’s huge slate of live-action reboots of their classic animated films. Although the studio has been doing this since the 90’s with films like 101 Dalmations starring Glenn Close, the recent boom of remakes began in the mid-2010s with Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book all arriving between 2014 and 2016. The studio has gone on to readapt Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, and The Lion King for theaters and Lady and the Tramp and Mulan for Disney+. Also in development are live-action adaptations of The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, and more.

The original Pinocchio, which was only the second feature ever made by Walt Disney Studios, premiered in 1940. Adapted from the Italian children’s book The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, it followed the adventures of a living puppet who wishes to be a real boy. The film, among its many iconic elements, introduced the song “When You Wish Upon a Star,” which has become synonymous with the Disney animated film brand.

Per ComicBook.com, Pinocchio has been scheduled for release on Disney’s streaming service sometime between July and September 2022. The film will star Tom Hanks as the woodcarver Geppetto who creates Pinocchio. It will reteam Hanks with director Robert Zemeckis, who previously collaborated with him on the CGI animated Christmas feature The Polar Express.

The cast of the live-action Pinocchio also includes The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth in the title role. Cynthia Erivo also stars as the Blue Fairy alongside Luke Evans (who played Gaston in the previous Disney remake Beauty and the Beast) as the Coachman who runs Pleasure Island. The voice cast includes Keegan-Michael Key as the fox “Honest,” John Worthington Foulfellow, Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, the iconic character who becomes Pinocchio’s conscience.

Many filmmakers have tried and failed to bring Pinocchio to life in a satisfying way, but if any company has the resources to make it work, it’s Disney. Not all of Robert Zemeckis’ experiments with CGI have been successful, but he was an early adopter of the format and has refined his approach to the medium through a course of trial and error. It will also likely be helpful to the CGI technicians that Pinocchio is a being made of wood, which is a material that is much easier to render than a living creature if done properly.
