After being fan cast as the lead in a speculative Ben 10 live-action movie, Tom Holland made it very clear he’s not interested in the role.

Tom Holland shoots down fans who want him to play the lead in a live-action Ben 10 movie. Thanks in large part to his role as Peter Parker in the MCU, Holland has become one of the most popular young actors in the world. But there is also life beyond Spider-Man, as Holland is trying to prove with his upcoming projects The Devil All the Time and Cherry, the latter of which reunites him with Avengers: Endgame directors the Russo Brothers for a decidedly non-Peter Parker type role.

Though Holland is indeed making it clear with his upcoming roles that he’s ready to move away from franchise movies and take on more challenging, adult roles, Holland’s fans seem eager to keep him in a state of perpetual childhood. As a case in point, Holland recently was put forward by a fan as the logical choice to play the title character in a live-action adaptation of Ben 10, an animated show about a young boy who acquires the ability to transform into different aliens. Indeed, the fan casting idea took off on the internet, as more Holland supporters got behind the notion of the actor playing the would-be movie’s teen hero.

But there’s one person who definitely isn’t down with the idea of Holland playing Ben 10, and that’s Holland himself. Responding directly to an Instagram post by user Daquan pushing the casting idea, Holland gave a terse one-word answer as to whether he agrees. See Holland’s post in the space below (via Fandom):

Of course, the original Ben 10 animated show followed the adventures of a ten-year-old, while the later Ben 10: Alien Force revisited Ben as a teenager and appropriately took on darker shadings. Presumably, fans who want to see Holland play Ben 10 are imagining the movie version would jump farther ahead in the future so it would actually make sense to cast the 24-year-old Holland as the lead (unless they want him to break with reality and play 15). Previously, fans actually put forth an even older actor in Chris Evans to play a fully grown-up version of Ben 10 in an adaptation of the show’s Ben 10,000 timeline.

However, Holland’s very blunt response to his being fan cast as Ben 10 makes it clear that if he were approached to play the character at any age, he would not be interested. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Holland isn’t a fan of the original show, but may likely indicate that he simply thinks it wouldn’t make sense to do Ben in his twenties. It could also be his way of saying that he’s really ready to move on from roles like this, after playing Peter Parker five times on screen (with at least one more go-around yet to come), a bit of speculation that would seem to be reinforced by his recent choices of roles. Indeed, it makes sense that after establishing himself as a hero in franchise films, Holland would now be ready to branch out and develop his acting chops by taking on edgier and more challenging characters in films that don’t require him to run around in brightly colored costumes doing cartoonish things as Ben 10 would.
