Tom Taylor Is The Perfect Writer For New Marvel and DC Comics Readers

Before diving into the main continuities of Marvel and DC Comics, there are two alternate reality series being written by Tom Taylor that are perfect for new comics readers. With only a few issues having been released for each, Marvel Comics’ Dark Ages and DC’s Dark Knights of Steel feature some of the most popular and well-known heroes and villains, putting them in intriguing new spaces that aren’t dependent upon large amounts of context or backstory. As such, these respective miniseries can serve as great primers for new readers wanting to get their feet wet.

While Tom Taylor has written a variety of series set in the primary universes of Marvel and DC Comics, he’s recently found great success penning what are commonly known as “What If…?” or “Elseworlds” stories. Set in alternate realities, stories such as DCeased (a zombie apocalypse in the DC Universe) and Injustice (a video game tie-in about Superman becoming a dictator) have allowed Tom Taylor greater creative freedom to take characters and events in all-new directions. They’re also self-contained miniseries rather than being part of an ongoing storyline.

Currently, Taylor has begun to release issues of Dark Ages and Dark Knights of Steel, existing as stories set in alternate universes. In Marvel’s Dark Ages with artist Iban Coello, the defeat of a major threat known as the Unmaker results in a consistent EMP being activated, causing a planet-wide loss of electricity. Years later, heroes such as Black Panther, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and more are working to keep the remains of humanity safe from threats in the dark as they rebuild society. Likewise, DC’s Dark Knights of Steel reveals a DC Universe whose heroes and villains are living in a medieval fantasy world, one that sees Batman as a literal dark knight in shining armor while Superman is a noble prince.

While these respective stories may be set in different timelines and universes, Taylor does a great job maintaining the core traits of Marvel and DC’s well-known characters, making the stories easy and simple starting points for new comics readers. There’s certainly nothing wrong with either publisher’s majority of titles that cross over and connect to make up their individual universes, though the level of context and references to past events and stories can feel daunting to first-time readers. As such, alternate reality stories like the ones written by Tom Taylor provide a small taste of the grander experience, easing readers in as a fun entry point.

What’s truly great is that Taylor has a wide collection of titles he’s written in recent years for both Marvel and DC. While some exist as self-contained stories set in alternate realities, he also has plenty that belong to the main continuities. As a result, if readers want to dive deeper into the larger interconnected universes, they can do so while still reading Tom Taylor’s highly praised titles such as his current Nightwing or Superman: Son of Kal-El titles for DC. In any case, the first few issues of Dark Ages and/or Dark Knights of Steel would make great Christmas gifts for those wishing to start reading Marvel and DC Comics.
