John Cusack has led a successful decades-long career that started out as the sweet leading man of the 1980’s romantic comedies and continued on with comedic and dramatic roles having built a reputable career with countless iconic roles. Although mostly sticking with comedic roles, Cusack has shown that he can shine through in more dramatic roles and has a nice balance between comedy and drama.

10 Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) – 80%

The film Grosse Pointe Blank is a balance between action and comedy and stars John Cusack and Minnie Driver. Cusack returns to town for a high school reunion and runs into old flame Driver, little does she know he is now a hitman for hire.

Cusack’s hitman was coerced into going back to his high school graduation by his assistant, played by sister Joan Cusack, and when he returns he runs into other hitmen he must take out one by one. It’s a fun movie that highlights Cusack’s dramatic, action, and comedic acting.

9 The Sure Thing (1985) – 85%

This 1980’s rom-com, directed by Rob Reiner, follows two college students who are hitchhiking their way across the U.S. to meet up with significant others. Daphne Zuniga plays the other college student who needs a ride to see her boyfriend and John Cusack’s college student hears of a woman who is a “sure thing” so he decides to travel across the country to meet her at a party. Slowly we see Cusack and Zuniga begin to bond on their journey and question if they are a better match than who they’re traveling for.

It’s a fun 80’s rom-com romp and worth checking out if you’re a fan of John Cusack!

8 Anastasia (1997) – 85%

This animated film is very loosely based on the legend that Anastasia survived when her royal family was executed in Russia.

The story follows a young woman, voiced by Meg Ryan, who happens to look like the lost Duchess that teams up with two conmen, John Cusack and Kelsey Grammer, to make the royal family believe she is, in fact, the lost Duchess. It’s an interesting and engaging film that has the iconic song “Once Upon a December.”

7 Eight Men Out (1988) – 86%

Eight Men Out is a sports drama based on the true story of eight men on the 1919 White Sox team, later dubbed the Black Sox, that helped to fix the World Series. The eight men agreed to lose the game so gamblers would have a guaranteed win if they bet against them.

The team was widely considered one of the greatest collection of players, but they were not appreciated or compensated for their greatness, and some of them turned to this plan out of frustration. It’s an engaging retelling of a historic event that’s worth checking out!

6 Love & Mercy (2014) – 90%

This biographical drama tells the story of Beach Boys’ founder and frontman, Brian Wilson. Love & Mercy goes back and forth focusing on different time periods in the musician’s life as Paul Dano plays a younger Wilson in the 1960s and John Cusack plays the 1980’s Wilson.

The movie delves into Wilson’s mental state during the two time periods while also highlighting his relationships with his second wife (Elizabeth Banks) and psychotherapist (Paul Giamatti) amongst his musical career. It’s a fantastic movie, especially for a Beach Boys fan, and an interesting and engaging story at its center.

5 High Fidelity (2000) – 91%

High Fidelity follows a record store owner, played by John Cusack, as he deals with a recent and devastating heartbreak. To try to deal with his pain he turns his breakups into a playlist similar to how he takes time to put together a playlist of songs to relay a certain feeling.

He replays his top five breakups to try to analyze what he’s doing wrong by returning to his past relationships because he was taken completely by surprise by the recent breakup. He talks directly to the audience, breaking the fourth wall, countless times and it’s a fun interaction. It’s a funny and endearing movie with a rocking soundtrack and a lot of John Cusack and Jack Black, check it out!

4 Stand By Me (1986) – 91%

This coming-of-age classic, based on the Stephen King novella, focuses on four young boys (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell) on their journey to see a dead body. The group has to dodge local bullies (led by Kiefer Sutherland), trains, leeches, and dogs on their hike.

John Cusack shows up in flashbacks as the main character’s older brother who had died in a car crash. Although Cusack’s only in the film for a few scenes we see a strong connection between the two brothers. If you haven’t seen this classic film, definitely give it a watch.

3 Being John Malkovich (1999) – 93%

In the comedy with a fantastical twist, Being John Malkovich, John Cusack plays a down on his luck puppeteer that finds a portal that takes him directly into the head of the famous actor, John Malkovich, played by Malkovich himself.

Cusack’s character begins to sell tickets for the experience of being John Malkovich, and when Malkovich figures out what is happening he tries to force him to stop with no avail. Cusack instead learns that he can control Malkovich and starts to live as the famous actor and makes him a famous puppeteer. It’s an outlandish plot and movie but had great success, is certainly interesting, and deserves its cult classic status.

2 Bullets Over Broadway (1994) – 97%

John Cusack stars as a playwright trying to get his latest work financed. In hopes of doing this, he agrees to hire a mobster’s girlfriend to star in his play to get his first big break on Broadway, but of course, things start to go wrong. It’s a fun jukebox musical with an organized crime dangerous edge to it.
