AnimeJapan recently polled their audience to put together the top ten list of manga that fans want to see adapted to anime in 2021. It was the organizer’s fourth annual contest, and over 250,000 votes were submitted across over 100 manga options. With such stiff competition, the winners are sure to appeal to a wide variety of fans.
The winners form quite a diverse list, from action to romance to mystery and everything in between. Some of the manga are already in talks for adaptations. Which of these will be first on your list to watch?
10 The Apothecary Diaries
The Apothecary Diaries follows the and adventures of Maomao, a young woman palace servant in feudal Japan who has been trained in herbal medicine. Once her skills are revealed when she breaks a curse on imperial heirs, Maomao’s qualities are sought out by a eunuch to endeavor countless mysteries.
The light novel was 2019’s sixth best-seller at over 400 thousand copies sold, and Square Enix ranked it 5th on their Nationwide Bookstore Employees Recommended Comics of 2020. There is both a light novel and a manga. Readers can find The Apothecary Diaries anywhere that Square Enix licensed manga is sold.
9 My Lv999 Love for Yamada-kun
Another series in the High School Romance genre, My Lv999 Love for Yamada-kun falls somewhere between Sword Art Online and Your Lie in April. It is set in an in-game world where the protagonist, Akane Kinoshita, is cheated on by her boyfriend and decides to swear off gamer boys… until she finds one that she just can’t avoid and makes it her mission to sway the overly unsociable game master.
The plot unfolds as Akane falls in love with Akito Yamada, who, while he has maxed out every stat in the game (hence Lv999), is not the most experienced in much else. So, Akane must find a way to capture his heart, and the two will find new friends and adventures along the way.
8 Komi Can’t Communicate
While it’s eight on this year’s list, Komi Can’t Communicate placed first on the 2020 poll and has been in the Weekly Shonen Sunday serialization since 2016. The manga centers on a popular high school student, Shouko Komi, who really struggles to communicate with others.
Komi breaks all the tropes of your stereotypically high school prom queen. Only one other person in the school realizes just how awkward she is, and, to help her overcome these communication barriers, Hitohito Tadano decides to help Komi find 100 friends. Komi Can’t Communicate is definitely a fun, easy-going, and humorous story for fans to read.

ONIMAI is a story to make siblings weary… especially brothers. The protagonist (or antagonist) Mihari Oyama poisons her brother’s dinner, turning him into a girl. From there, the story follows the adventures of Mihari’s newly found sister who must navigate the experiences of everyday girlhood.
For fans of the gender swap genre, ONIMAI is sure to deliver. It’s an often light-hearted reminder of how different our lived experiences can really be. Nonetheless, it’s an ever-vigilant reminder to beware of your siblings!

Spy x Family chronicles the adventure of a spy who must create a makeshift family for a mission to infiltrate a school but finds that his “daughter” is a psychic and his “wife” is an assassin! The story takes family drama to a new level as each member must navigate their dual lives in secrecy.
