Tower of God Why Did Rachel Name Bam After the 25th Night

Tower of God is one of the first Korean webtoon series’ to really make a splash with international audiences. Its exciting world and mysterious premise are part of this appeal, as are its many characters. Said characters are known among fans for having some pretty weird names, and that’s definitely the case with the series’ protagonist. Bam, aka the 25th Bam, is the main character of Tower of God, but even the series’ fans are oftentimes left scratching their heads over his name.

25th Bam may seem like a nonsensical moniker to some readers, but the reason for this name may reflect his origins and potential role. Here’s a closer look at just why the protagonist of Tower of God has such a strange title.

Who Is 25th Bam?

25th Bam/Baam is the main character of Tower of God, entering said tower at the beginning of the webtoon series. He does so in search of his friend Rachel, who was the only other person that he interacted with in the years before entering the tower. Rachel eventually leaves for the tower herself, prompting Bam’s search for her.

Rachel was also the one who told him his name, so in many ways, she’s the reason why he’s called 25th Bam. She also tells him that this name reflects his birthday, as he was born on the night of December 25th. Baam/Bam means night, further explaining this still strange title. However, the circumstances behind Rachel knowing his birthday are somewhat mysterious.

Why Is 25th Bam Named That?

As mentioned, Bam was born on the 25th of December, with the other translation of Bam, “chestnut,” further reflecting the holiday. It’s this somewhat religious festivity that might further explain why Bam has the name, especially when his origin is factored in. Bam is the son of Arlen Grace and V, who was killed by a jealous Zahard. His mother preserved his body, however, having him resurrected by the Outside God upon leaving the tower.

This information, when combined with the almost messianic role that Bam has throughout the series, helps to explain why his name would reference Christmas. As the Christ figure of the series, it makes sense that his birthday would be the 25th of December (the day on which many celebrate Jesus’ birth) and have a name that references this birth date. His resurrection at the hands of a deity also somewhat resembles Jesus’ own resurrection, with his death at the hands of a jealous ruler being synonymous with King Herod trying to kill the infant Messiah.

The numeric name also homages V, the name of Bam’s father. Given Bam’s own multilayered name, V likely has different meanings as well. It stands for five, whereas Bam has the number 25 in his name. V is also a symbol for peace, while the aforementioned Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Keep in mind that Rachel is a name derived from the Hebrew name meaning “ewe.” A ewe is a female sheep, while Jesus is referred to as a “Good Shepherd.”

Of course, this is all conjecture based on the savior role that Bam has grown into throughout the series — something further solidified by the series’ title. Fans should also keep in mind that the anime simplifies Bam’s name, simply calling him the Japanese word for “night.” With what his name references, however, 25th Bam represents a truly silent night indeed.
