Transformers Why Starscream Is Immortal (Mutant Spark Explained)

Transformers features a lot of daunting enemies, but none as unique as Starscream, the treacherous Decepticon lieutenant who’s literally incapable of dying. Starscream was the leader of the Decepticon seekers at the very beginning of the Generation 1 cartoon – a slimy, ambitious scoundrel who was always looking for an opportunity to usurp power from his leader, Megatron.

Megatron kept Starscream around in a bizarre show of respect for his treachery, but that uneasy alliance would end during the events of The Transformers: The Movie. In that 1986 big screen outing, the Decepticons mount a massive attack on Autobot City in an attempt to snuff out the Autobots once and for all. Both sides take heavy casualties, with the crippled Decepticons eventually having to retreat.

On the way back to Cybertron, Starscream dumps the fatally wounded Megatron into the vacuum of space, finally taking the reins as the new leader of the Decepticons. However, Starscream’s luck would not last – the planet sized Transformers Unicron reformatted the broken Megatron into the more powerful, lethal Galvatron, who returned to Cybertron and promptly incinerated Starscream, leaving him a pile of ash.

But that was not the end of Starscream. He returned in the Transformers season 3 episode “Starscream’s Ghost” as a spirit who possesses other Decepticons in an effort to get revenge on Galvatron. He would eventually regain his body in the episode “Ghost In The Machine,” before being blasted once again by Galvatron, tumbling out of control through space.

Hundreds of years later, Starscream made his presence felt in the Beast Wars. He inhabited the body of the Predacon Waspinator and tried to wrest control of the faction away from the new Megatron, but to no avail; his spark – essentially his tangible soul – was expelled and returned to the vacuum of space. A later episode of Beast Wars would explain that Starscream has a mutant, indestructible spark – a freak of nature that’s unique among all Transformers. Secret Maximal experiments would attempt to develop another immortal spark in the form of Protoform-X, which would eventually become the Predacon Rampage.

Starscream has a unique place in Transformers lore. Virtually no one trusts him, and with good reason; he’d stab anyone in the back if it suited his purposes. His immortality and subsequent exile into space makes him a force to be reckoned with, no matter what continuity or time frame. He may never get to overthrow Megatron, but he’ll likely keep trying until the end of time.
