HBO is in early talks to reboot its sultry vampire series True Blood. Based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood centers around a co-mingling group of humans, vampires, and other supernatural creatures in rural Louisiana. It made sex symbols out of Alexander Skarsgard, Ryan Kwanten, and Anna Paquin while satisfying fans of erotic, bloody horror.

While some fans are excited to see True Blood return to the small screen, others are confused as to why the series would come back so quickly after it left the air. Do people really need more Sookie Stackhouse? More fairies? More werepanthers? More deranged vamps like Russell Edgington? Better yet, how could a reboot take the basic story in new directions?

8 Excited: A New Legion Of Attractive Vampires

If True Blood is known for anything, it’s presenting audiences with plenty of beautiful characters. There’s no doubt that the reboot, like the original series, will center around seductive, attractive vampires who use their looks and enchantment abilities to get what they want.

Details about the reboot’s cast are scant, and none of the original cast members have confirmed their involvement. While some people speculate that a new generation of actors will be cast, it’s still too early to tell.

7 Not Excited: It’s Only Been Six Years

True Blood ran for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014. It’s only been six years since Hep-V waged a new war against the show’s vampires and the bizarre love triangle between Sookie Stackhouse, Bill Compton, and Eric Northman came to an end.

Considering how many plot twists, new characters, and supernatural motifs were jammed into True Blood’s 80 episodes, what else is there to say so soon after the original series concluded? This leaves some fans concerned whatever comes out of the reboot will pale in comparison to its predecessor.

6 Excited: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa Is Working On The Pilot

One promising piece of news to come out of HBO’s announcement is that writer, director, and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is developing the reboot with Jami O’Brien. Aguirre-Sacasa is the man behind the popular teen series Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Based on Aguirre-Sacasa’s TV legacy, the True Blood reboot might feature a younger generation of vampires. It’s almost guaranteed to boast tons of drama, romance, and scares.

5 Not Excited: The Original Cast Doesn’t Seem Thrilled

True Blood’s original cast took to Twitter to share their surprise about the forthcoming reboot. Anna Paquin, who plays Sookie, tweeted, “Well, this is the first I’m hearing about this.”

Her co-star Denis O’Hare, who plays Russell Edgington, replied, “Me too…” to Paquin’s tweet. Their responses to the announcement seem to indicate that they aren’t overjoyed, nor are they in talks to return for the reboot — at least for now.

4 Excited: Jami O’Brien Is Also Working On The Pilot

Aguirre-Sacasa’s co-creator Jami O’Brien is an up-and-coming producer and writer. O’Brien’s latest venture is the Zachary Quinto-led vampire series NOS4A2, so she has plenty of experience developing shows about bloodsuckers for current audiences.

O’Brien is also credited as a writer for Fear the Walking Dead and Hell on Wheels. She’s the supervising producer for the ballet miniseries Flesh and Bone.

3 Not Excited: Most Fans Think The Story Has Run Its Course

On Twitter and Reddit, some fans are sharing their casting choice wish lists, whereas others are asking why a True Blood reboot needs to be made. There don’t seem to any otherworldly occurrences in Bon Temps left to explore after the fifth season.

This is proven by how campy and absurd the show’s plot becomes in its final few seasons. From synthetic blood-producing corporations to vampire/fairy warlocks, True Blood’s later developments seem stripped of any originality or creativity.

2 Excited: Showrunner Alan Ball Is Returning As Executive Producer

Alan Ball served as True Blood’s showrunner for its first five seasons. The Oscar-winning screenwriter for American Beauty is also known for helming Six Feet Under and, more recently, the LGBTQ+ film Uncle Frank.

Ball plans to serve as executive producer for the reboot. This implies many of the show’s best themes, ideas, and characterizations will remain intact — including the queer, subversive elements that made it stand apart from other supernatural series.

1 Not Excited: The Series Finale Is Way Too Awkward To Recover From

In the eyes of many fans and critics, True Blood’s series finale is awful, plain and simple. All of the show’s transgressive, provocative ideas are thrown out the window in order to provide audiences with a bizarrely happy ending that feels very different from the rest of the series.

True Blood changes course from playing with gender, sexuality, and traditional ideas about relationships to reinforcing the norms it previously strove to undermine. It’s hard to imagine how to breathe new life into a series that ended on such a disappointing note.
