Two More Classic D&D Settings Are Coming Back After Ravenloft

Two classic settings will be returning in the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons following the revival of the Ravenloft campaign setting. The current edition of D&D uses the Forgotten Realms as its default campaign setting, but players have other options if they wish to set their games elsewhere.

The other D&D campaign worlds include Eberron, which is a world where magic is often used as a replacement for technology. There are two campaign books that adapt planes from Magic: The Gathering into D&D, with Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica and Mythic Odysseys of Theros bringing those worlds into the game. There is also Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, which fleshes out the titular continent that is used in Critical Role’s games. The most recent D&D campaign book was Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, which brought back the Ravenloft setting.

Wizards of the Coast has announced that 2020 was its best-ever sales year. The company released an infographic with details about 2020, which included an upcoming product schedule. It has been confirmed that two more classic campaign settings are returning, with Ravenloft being the first of three.

Wizards of the Coast hasn’t revealed which campaign settings will be returning, but there are plenty of options on the table, barring a few that cannot return, due to rights issues. It would be easy to bring back the Greyhawk or Dragonlance D&D settings, as they are standard fantasy worlds and much of their lore has already been established. The Dark Sun campaign setting was previously revived in fourth edition, so that’s another strong contender. There are also campaign settings like Planescape, which maps out most of the multiverse, and Spelljammer, which involves flying magical spaceships between worlds.

The fact that two campaign settings are coming back means that old-school fans have a lot of reasons to get their hopes up. A lot of fans have shown interest in the return of Spelljammer, and elements from that setting have appeared in Baldur’s Gate 3 and some of the recent published D&D adventures. There are new Dragonlance novels being released in 2021, which are bringing back the characters from the original books, so that setting is also a strong contender for a revival. Whatever the case, it will be exciting to see the older Dungeons & Dragons campaign worlds revived for a modern audience, especially if one of them involves becoming pirates on magical spaceships.
