After teasing a potential new Rayman game with fresh concept art, Ubisoft has now apologized for the confusion it has caused amid rumors that it was about to reveal a sequel. The platforming franchise is one of Ubisoft’s most popular properties but has not seen a new game since the 2013 release Rayman Legends. Fans have been anticipating a sequel for some time, although the publisher has been quiet on any potential release.

The future of the Rayman series is also in doubt following the decision by Michel Ancel to exit the gaming industry. The industry veteran announced last week that he was quitting his role at Ubisoft to manage his wildlife sanctuary full time. He had been working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 before his resignation but is heralded as the creator of Rayman. He also directed both Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, so it is unclear who would take charge of a Rayman game at Ubisoft now that Ancel is no longer involved.

Ubisoft has now apologized for its initial post, denying rumors that a new Rayman game is in development. The French publisher had previously teased a new entry in the platforming franchise in a series of now-deleted Facebook posts. As noted by Nintendo Life, the posts contained concept art from an unknown project and fans quickly assumed it meant a new game was on the way. Ubisoft replied to several Facebook users to deny this was the case but has since published a new message on the social media site apologizing for the confusion. The latest post reads:

“You may have recently seen a post on our page that includes visuals from Rayman and may be confusing. We have no information to share at this time regarding the Rayman license. We would like to apologize for this misunderstanding.”

Hello everyone ! You may have recently seen a post on our page that includes visuals from Rayman and may be confusing….

Rayman has seen a slight resurgence in recent times. In March, Ubisoft made Rayman Legends available to players for free as part of its effort to help those who were stuck at home self-isolating due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was just one of the titles that were included in the special promotion. Unfortunately, the game was only available on PC, and users needed to make a UPlay account to get access to it.

The fact that Ubisoft has had to apologize for leading fans to believe that a new Rayman game might have been in development is embarrassing for the publisher. The rumors of an imminent announcement only started when the company teased previously unseen concept art from the series. But if there is one good thing that can be taken from this strange affair, it’s that Ubisoft knows how passionate fans of the series are. This will bode well if it comes to deciding whether to start work on a new entry in the franchise.
