Umbrella Academy Season 3 Needs To Remember How Powerful Allison Is

The Umbrella Academy season 3 would benefit from remembering how powerful Allison Hargreeves truly is while exploring the potential of her capabilities. Nicknamed “The Rumor,” Allison serves as one of the seven gifted children adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves to form a group of crime fighters. Emmy Raver-Lampman portrays the female character, who was originally created as part of Gerard Way’s comic of the same name. Though designated as Number Three in Reginald’s presumed ranking of the siblings, Allison is one of the strongest based on the mental control she can bestow upon victims.

Like the rest of the siblings (except Vanya), Allison has been trained to use her abilities from an early age while being raised by Reginald. Granted, the Hargreeves siblings continue to struggle with the full weight of their powers, with some hardly scratching the surface with their capabilities. As defined in season 1, Allison’s primary unique power involves mind-control, which is unleashed when she utters the words “I heard a rumor…” before inserting exactly what she wants the victim to do or believe. While the ability came in handy as a young crime fighter, Allison stopped using the “rumor” power as she reached adulthood.

Relying on the mind control gave Allison a career in acting and a loving family, but she realized she went about it all in the wrong way. The consequences surrounding her power were put back into the spotlight when it was revealed Reginald made her use them to convince Vanya that she wasn’t gifted. The fallout of truth left Allison without a voice, and in turn, without her powers. She was forced to live without the power after being transported back to the 1960s in The Umbrella Academy season 2. Allison didn’t begin using her gifts until reuniting with her siblings, causing more problems. While the “rumors” might bring repercussions, it’s time for the series to allow Allison to fully discover the potential of her gifts. The Umbrella Academy season 3 has the chance to eliminate Allison’s caution while diving deeper into what the series has already teased.

In season 2, Allison harnessed her power to force a prejudiced worker at the diner to pour scalding hot coffee on himself. Though she prefaced the statement with “I heard a rumor…”, she kept him under her control before stating “more.” This indicated that Allison had control of how long the victim would be under her control. Even before this scene, the second installment teased a power linked to her comic book counterpart, specifically reality manipulation. When Number Five visited an alternate version of 1963 Dallas, he witnessed his siblings battling invading Russians. Allison told enemy soldiers that she heard a rumor that she blew their minds just seconds before their heads exploded. While not fully explored in the series just yet, it proved there’s another level to Allison’s powers that have yet to come into play.

It’s understandable why Allison has a history of being hesitant when using her powers, especially since it has affected relationships with family members. Still, she and the rest of the Umbrella Academy continue to find themselves in dangerous situations. Facing the Sparrow Academy or other villainous forces will be a tough task in season 3, so the team needs all the help they can get. Allison has the ability to mind control her foes and possibly even kill them with the mention of a phrase. Considering she fell victim to her own powers at the hands of Lila in season 2, Allison is aware of how much of a gamechanger her gift can be. It’s time The Umbrella Academy allowed her to embrace those powers instead of suppressing them.
