XMen Beasts Most Disgusting Form Was Beyond His Worst Nightmare

While the X-Men’s Hank McCoy, aka Beast, is one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe, his mutation often sees others question his humanity, and its unpredictability has left him with a deep-seated fear of what he might eventually become. Sadly, one story realized his worst nightmare, revealing a monstrous form far worse than even his darkest nightmare.

Hank’s natural mutation originally resulted in enlarged hands and feet, along with an unusual physiology that gave him surprising dexterity and agility. Sadly, Beast later experimented with drugs that could replicate mutant abilities, prompting his own power to spiral out of control. Since then, Beast has been covered in a thick, blue fur, but he’s also prone to dramatic physiological changes that can vastly change his appearance. Following his secondary mutation into a more feline form, New X-Men #117 (from Grant Morrison and Ethan Van Sciver) saw the psychic parasite Cassandra Nova instill in Beast a long-lasting fear that he was devolving into a lesser life-form, taunting him over how long it would be until he became an insect or worm.

Sadly, this prediction came true in 2015’s Siege #2 (from Kieron Gillen, Filipe Andrade, James Stokoe, and Jorge Coelho). When reality was destroyed by the Beyonders, Doctor Doom collected the last few remnants of reality into the patchwork Battleworld. On Battleworld, Doom tormented those who broke his laws by condemning them to the Shield – a huge wall protecting the more civilized domains from those ruled by predatory beings like Ultron, Annihilus, and the Marvel Zombies. While the heroes of the Shield fought bravely, their lives were brutal and short, and it was common for them to fall in battle only to be transformed into weapons against their former allies. This was the fate that befell Beast when he fell into the clutches of the insectoid Annihilation Wave.

Narrated by Beast’s former partner Abigail Brand – the Shield’s commander – it’s revealed that the Annihilation Wave were able to capture and experiment on Hank McCoy, using his unstable genetics to turn him into a towering worm monster the heroes are forced to kill. It’s unclear if this is the mainstream Beast or a close variant (the heroes manning the Shield come from across the multiverse), but either way it’s a truly tragic end for Hank, fulfilling his nightmare of becoming a lesser creature in even grander fashion than he ever feared. Thankfully, reality was reconstructed after Secret Wars, and precious few heroes remember what happened on Battleworld, though the suffering and death still very much took place.

Hank McCoy has long been a character strongly tied to the central themes of prejudice and bigotry in the X-Men franchise – a hero and genius looked down on by others because of his appearance. Especially after Cassandra Nova, Hank began to internalize this hatred, fearing the moment when he lost the humanity he still possessed, but which wider society often refused to recognize. In telling a story of heroes facing impossible odds, Siege realized Hank’s worst nightmare as a terrible tragedy, but it also proved his fears correct – Beast really does live in a world that would be more than happy to strip him of his humanity.

Since then, Beast has been drifting more and more towards the darkness, choosing to indulge his scientific genius at the expense of the moral wisdom that long made him the heart of the X-Men. It’s possible that his increasingly callous persona is a response to the fear he feels at losing his intellect, but while Siege depicted his worst fears writ large, Beast’s new role as the X-Men’s heartless spymaster is making it clear that there’s more than one way to become a monster.
