Umbrella Academy: Why Season 3 May Have Killed Off The Original Academy
The original The Umbrella Academy team could have been killed at some point in the current timeline, fixing a big issue season 3 is facing.

The final episode of The Umbrella Academy season 2 saw the title team returning to their present day in 2019 and finding out that their team doesn’t exist, and instead, the team Reginald founded was the Sparrow Academy – and all this might suggest that the Umbrella Academy was actually killed and the Sparrows took their place. Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy jumped to the world of streaming in February 2019 thanks to Netflix and it was an instant success. It didn’t take long for the series to be renewed for a second season, and the new episodes arrived in July 2020.
The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who were born under the same mysterious circumstances as other 36 babies. Upon hearing about this curious event, scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could but only got seven. As the kids developed superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed the team “The Umbrella Academy”, but the kids parted ways as years passed. The Hargreeves reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the apocalypse, but they couldn’t stop the end of the world and had to jump to a safer place and point in time to save themselves.
Season 2 caught up with the Hargreeves in Dallas, Texas, in 1963, the year they reunited as they landed on different years between 1960 and 1963. After successfully stopping the apocalypse in 1963, the Hargreeves were given a briefcase by The Commission to return to their present, which is 2019. Once there, they discovered that the apocalypse didn’t happen, Reginald is alive, and he founded the Sparrow Academy with different children. This leaves the question of what happened to the members of the Umbrella Academy in that timeline, and while they could be living their lives on their own, it’s also possible that in season 3 they were killed years before the original team arrived in 2019.
The rules of time travel change in every movie and TV show, and how exactly it works in The Umbrella Academy is unknown, but having two versions of Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, and Vanya would be very complicated and create a paradox (which Five explained in season 2 when he was getting close to where his other self was), so it’s possible that in this new timeline, all of them were killed. The one responsible for it could have been Reginald himself, as he met the Umbrella members in 1963 and they didn’t leave a good impression, so he could have gotten rid of them before they messed with his plans, whatever they are. Another suspect is Harlan, who by the end of season 2 still had powers, and as he witnessed the burden the Umbrella Academy carried with them, he could have killed them at some point.
This would save The Umbrella Academy season 3 from a couple of issues as it wouldn’t have to deal with the big question of what happened to the versions of the Umbrellas that live in that specific timeline and would skip the whole “paradox” issue. This would also give another problem to the team to deal with, as they would have to find out who and why they killed them, all in addition to dealing with the Sparrow Academy and whatever Reginald has been planning.
