Umbrella Academy Why Vanya Didnt Suffer Withdrawals But Klaus Did

The Umbrella Academy has seen its main characters go through a lot of personal problems and followed Klaus through withdrawals when he stopped using drugs all of a sudden, but Vanya didn’t go through the same even though she spent years under heavy medication. Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy made the jump to the world of streaming thanks to Netflix in February 2019. The series was a big hit, and it was renewed for a second season shortly after, with the new batch of episodes arriving in July 2020.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who along with other 36 babies were born on the same day, at the same time, and to women who weren’t pregnant when the day began. This curious event caught the attention of scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could, but only got seven. As they developed superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed the team called “The Umbrella Academy”, but he wasn’t a good father to the children, who gradually parted ways, and only Luther (Tom Hopper) stayed as part of the team. Reginald had some extreme methods to train and “help” the kids control their powers, and the ones who suffered the most were Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Vanya (Elliot Page).

Klaus has the ability to communicate with the dead and make them corporeal, which is why he’s the only one who was able to see, talk, and interact with their deceased brother, Ben (Justin Min). Vanya’s powers, on the other hand, are all about sound – sound absorption, manipulation, projection, and through that, she displays telekinesis, atmokinesis, can fly and create force-fields. Because of this, Vanya was considered by Reginald as the most dangerous and powerful of all the Hargreeves, and as he was unable to help her control her powers, he took some extreme measures: he medicated her heavily for many years and used Allison’s (Emmy Raver-Lampman) powers to make her believe she was ordinary. Meanwhile, Klaus, haunted by all those voices and presences that only he could hear and see, became a drug addict.

The Umbrella Academy season 1 saw Klaus going through withdrawals when he was kidnapped by Hazel and Cha-Cha and had no access to drugs, while Vanya, who was on heavy medication for years, didn’t go through any withdrawals when Leonard Peabody cut her off her meds. This caught the attention of a fan on Reddit who pointed this out as a plot hole, as it does seem odd that Klaus went through that process and Vanya was unaffected by not taking her medication all of a sudden. However, other Reddit users pointed out that, as the Hargreeves are no regular humans, they would go through withdrawals differently – case in point, even though Klaus went through that experience, he recovered quickly. Vanya, then, might have gone through it in her own way, which was by her powers unleashing all of a sudden and with no control, more so as they are somewhat linked to her emotions.

Others have suggested Reginald might have given Vanya medication made specifically for her, which wouldn’t be surprising given he’s a scientist and has knowledge that goes beyond that of any other scientist as he’s not from this planet. Whatever the reason, it does seem strange that Vanya didn’t go through any symptoms of withdrawal when she was cut off from her medication in The Umbrella Academy season 1 while Klaus did go through hell and back, and while it’s unlikely that the show or the comic books will explain this at some point, it’s left open to the interpretation of fans and doesn’t affect the future of the series.
