Underworld 3 Why The Prequel Wasnt A Good Idea For The Franchise

Patrick Tatopoulos’ 2009 action horror film Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans was an unnecessary prequel to an already well established franchise. It is the third, but chronologically the first, film in the franchise. Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans showcases the origins of the main characters as well as the beginning of the Vampire-Lycan war. While prequels have the ability to strengthen the original story line of a franchise, this addition was not well received by fans and critics, and was ultimately added unnecessary complications to a plot that was introduce in the original.

Starring Kate Beckinsale as the vampire warrior Selene, Michael Sheen as the lycan Lucian, and Bill Nighy as the vampire elder Viktor, the film tells the story of Lucian who is the werewolf with the ability to take human form, making him a lycan. For years, vampires have kept lycans as slaves, believing that they are the lesser of the immortals. As the film progresses, it is revealed that Lucian has fallen in love with Viktor’s daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra). Ultimately, she tells Viktor and the council that she is pregnant with Lucian’s child. As a result, they sentence her to death.

The film ends with Viktor taking Selene under his wing after killing her family and transforming her into a vampire. In the original Underworld (2003), Lucian explains all of this to Selene before dying. She knows every bit of this information and so does the audience. Due to this fact, the prequel was entirely unnecessary, any miniscule detail provided in the film was not enough to substantiate the need for Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans.

Why The Franchise Didn’t Need A Prequel

The Underworld franchise was growing to be a cult classic during the 2000s but the prequel is notably remarked as one of the worst additions to the film’s story line. Traditionally, a prequel film is introduced to provide deeper context to something that is briefly mentioned in a previous installment. Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans regurgitated information that was well explained by Lucian in the original film. Therefore, extending the story solely for the sake of having a prequel made it entirely unnecessary and the franchise suffered for it.

Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans made a short story drawn out, though some fans enjoyed the movie. While it has its faults, it did provide a deeper sympathy for the lycans than the previous film did, and the importance of Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman). Consistently, it falls towards the middle or the end of lists in comparison to the rest of the franchise’s installments. This is, in part, due to critical reception and mixed reviews from fans. If it is viewed in the chronology of the franchise, it’s an exciting introduction to what is to come, but the fact remains that it’s a short story which is drawn out to make an underwhelming prequel.

Regardless, the film has poor reviews, doesn’t add anything new to the franchise, and left most fans overwhelmingly disappointed. If it had preceded the first film, it could have been well received and likely would not be considered an unnecessary addition to an incredible franchise of action horror films. Nonetheless, fans continue to revisit Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans for its impressive acting and the simple fact that it is an Underworld film.
