Uploads Season 2 Finale Could Drive Season 3 Straight Into Cliché Territory

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Upload Season 2, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Three key moments in the Upload season 2 finale may be setting the show up for some very predictable clichés in future seasons. Nathan’s bloody nose, the resetting of the digital version of Nathan and Ingrid collecting some of Nathan’s hair all seemed shocking as they popped up back-to-back in the final moments of the last episode. But in comparison to plots and themes already overdone in media, can the show really take the next season to a place where audiences don’t expect?

In relation to Nathan’s nosebleed, Season 1 showed that downloading a mind back into a physical body could have disastrously fatal results—namely, people’s heads exploding like they’d seen the Book of Boba Fett guest star list. In Season 2, tech has advanced enough to download digital minds back into pigeons, but the success rate is still fairly low. To make that point very clear, there is a scene in which a pigeon on the street explodes gore all over the place. Despite the risks, the Upload team decide to download Nathan back into the body Ingrid cloned for him anyway. While a bloody nose doesn’t mean Nathan’s head will explode, it’s obviously very concerning.

Unless Upload’s writers have every intention of angering their audiences by writing their lead character off the show, this nosebleed scenario can go one of a few ways. In the second big event in the finale, Tinsley discovers Nathan has vanished from Lakeview and begins to panic. A co-worker informs her that sometimes uploads can fall into a glitch, and all they need to fix it is to reload the last saved file of the individual from the system. This is something they do regularly without telling anybody because it would be bad for business if clients knew their loved ones sometimes needed a full reboot. Tinsley starts the reboot of Nathan’s backup into Lakeview.

With the real Nathan existing in a body on the outside, creating a backup version on the inside ensures that there’ll always be another one. While that’s a bonus for fans of Upload star Robbie Amell, it takes the the fear of losing a beloved character out of the equation entirely. Not only that, but it probably also means there’ll be two of him — or three if the third plot device comes into play when Ingrid uses that hair she collected to grow another clone body. It seems obvious that Upload is heading towards that clone trope.

If real world Nathan’s head doesn’t explode, Season 3 sets up a scenario of having two of him in play at all times. This could provide great cover so he and Nora can accomplish their mission on the outside without anyone suspecting him, since to the rest of the world he’ll still appear to be existing in Lakeview as simply an upload. But that could also create conflict between the two Nathans — Nathan 2.0 could grow jealous over real world Nathan’s relationship with Nora and ruin everything.

On the other hand, if Nathan’s head does explode, then the original Nathan will indeed be deceased for good while his clone inside Lakeview will still be alive and well. This version of Nathan, however, will have no idea about what transpired between him and Nora in the real world. In fact, he could lose a lot of important memories depending on when his last known backup took place. Nora will then be conflicted because Nathan 2.0 won’t be her Nathan, and this will create the overdone, will they/won’t they relationship that Upload doesn’t need. Farscape did that with their two leading characters years ago, and audiences were not happy with the outcome.

There’s also still the issue with the pre-mentioned Nathan 3.0 clone. Given everything she learned about Nathan in Season 2, it’s unclear who Ingrid plans on actually downloading into the new body she is inevitably going to make. She’s aware that the real Nathan ran off with Nora, and thus far she doesn’t know that Tinsley is creating a secondary Nathan inside Lakeview. She’s also aware that Nathan will never be in love with her, which means she’s likely to create an entirely new personality for him. This sets up a premise similar to the first Free Guy film in which two Nathans exist in the same world with conflicting personalities that will inevitably lead to a battle between them.

Alternatively, if Nathan’s head does explode but Nora and team discover Ingrid’s 3.0 clone, they could download Nathan 2.0 into the new body. This sets up a twist in which they can just keep backing up, cloning, and downloading Nates as many times as they want. They could wind up with a plot similar to the video game Detroit: Become Human, where there’s a hundred Nathans, each of them just waiting their turn to go online the moment the previous one perishes. That could then turn into other clone-themed plots where duplicates are battling against one another, or teaming up with each other like they do in Orphan Black, which is getting a spinoff.

Whichever route the show ultimately takes, if it has anything to do with clones it’s probably been done before, and done so many times that there’s little opportunity left for the element of surprise. For a series with as unique as Upload, this may be disappointing for audiences who’ve grown accustomed to being pleasantly caught off guard. Fans will have to wait and see where Season 3 goes, provided a third season is picked up by Prime Video.
